can you take it off just to take it off, or will it help it breath a little better or does it have to stay on?

If you look at at the top portion, it creates a sort of a seal to with the top part mounted on the hood. You can remove it and it will probably run fine, but you will have an open area where some debris can get into the engine. I've never actually tried running with out so I can't say certainly what else you could expect.

no more or less debris will get into the tmic then before its just there no longer will be that seal so air will not be FORCED to only travel through it. it can go any which way it chooses.

i get a shitload of bugs in myne now, taking it off may mean less actually end up there because they will have another direction to travel... but who knows.

take it off if you wanna be different... lol.

the entire car's breathing system is based on the ram air-like hood combined with a closed seal over the intercooler, i have heard and am part of the club, that has removed one side of the air inlet, in order for the intake and radiator to get some of that air. but all aftermarket intercoolers are made with a shroud that will fit in with the hood duct.
