Question on Engine Fan

OK, so we've been having an issue with the CX-9 -- it's a new issue, only started about a month ago -- where the engine fan comes on or stays on right after the car is shut off. 20-30 seconds or so, then it shuts down.

We took it in when it first came up, and the dealer changed out a relay, saying that was the problem.

A week after we got it back, it happened again. So we took it back again, and this time, they say it's SUPPOSED to do that. They claim there is a temperature sensor that will cause the fan to come on or stay on after shutdown if the engine is too hot. Well, I've never heard of that, and since the truck had gone about 5 miles in the cool morning air when it happened last, I highly doubt that's the problem.

So...has anyone heard of this or are they BSing me?

I knew the fans did that on some old sports cars with turbo to cool down the turbos even after the cars were shut off. I don't know if turbo cars still do that.
I have never owned any naturally aspirated cars do that, neither have I experienced that with my CX9.
Did you check the temp gauge when the fan did that? Was it in the middle?
Check coolant would be a good idea also. (see the reservoir tank on the side).

It's not a turbo-timer kind of thing (and no, the modern turbocharged cars don't have traditional turbo timers), and it's very intermittent.

Will check the temp next time, and I'll check her coolant tomorrow.

Some of the older cars I had before did that, but it only happens when it's hot out and after a long drive or sitting in traffic too long.

Many vehicles do this as it helps the engine from cooking when shut down. It keeps the water flowing by cooling it in the radiator. I would be very sure there is a warning sticker somewhere around the fan that says the fan can come on even if the engine is off.

After long or short trips for 18,000 miles, my fan has never come on after the ignition is off. Whether that is possible or not, it is definitely not normal. There may be a problem that causes the over-heating, which triggers the fan to keep going.

P.S. From my ScanGaugeII, the normal coolant temp is around 190F (+/- 3) when the temp gauge stays at the middle.

u shouldnt worry about that, it does to my ms3 when the engine is under higher temp when u shut it off.
