question about shifter

I've never thought anything of it because it was this way when I got my MS3 but there are days where my shifter is super smooth and there are days where it's choppy and clunky and feels like it's working it's way towards not wanting to even move.

I don't know how else to describe it, Does anyone else experience this? Is there anyone in the houston area that will meet with me and let me check out their MS3 to see if it's any different?

Could I have had a messed up shifter from the start or are all manual cars this way?

you know what? I have a 4dr S and that happened to me with 2nd and 3rd gear....it got stiffer and stiffer, and then all of a sudden sometimes it wouldn't go into gear, or would pop out of gear into neutral.....I went to mazda, they took it over night (free loaner car :) ), and the next day they said that they had replaced 2nd and 3rd gears for free under warantee....

it sounds like it's a similar problem to yours, I would go get it checked out

Well, the only reason I would think is when the shift is choppy, does it make a noise like a dog is being killed? (Only way to describe it really) If so, it means that you didn't push the clutch all the way in and you are essentially "power shifting".

If not, it could either be the cable that is the problem.

The clutch is definitely in all the way. It happens shifting into 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
There are times where it makes the dog noise on third and wont go in in which case i either skip 3rd or go at it again.

The ONE and only complaint I have on my MS3 is exactly this: It is almost impossible sometimes for me to shift smoothly into 2nd gear - not sure if its the engine mount issue (someone mentioned after the engine mount fix its smoother) or the design but you arent the only one that wishes the shfiting was smoother... weird thing is that if Im stomping on it the transitions are smooth - its only in heavy traffic, low rpm transitions that it gets grindy (no grinidng sounds just "feels" it through shifter.....could be the shift mounts too... who knows but yes I find it annoying at times...

It was me I think that said that, and I believe that there is something that the dealership did to mine while they were repairing the engine fall-out damage. At any rate, my shifter (which was clunky in 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd shifts, and grindy at times too) suddenly is perfect, with zero problems to report since the repair. The dealership guys say it is in the adjustments...
