Question about gas filler port(s)

:
2014 Mazda CX-5 GT w/ Tech
Noticed when I opened the gas flap, there is a space for a second gas filler port.
What was Mazda planning on using that for?

Almost looks like when electric cars have the two different charging ports...

What you are seeing is a vent so you don't get back pressure vehicle filling. It also serves as vapor line to the charcoal canister. Ed

The newer models actually have a spot for a second filler. Presumably it's where you would refill the DEF on diesel models, should they ever arrive.

The idea of a charger port is good too, for example if there were a model that had both a gas-powered range extender and a plug-in.

I believe the OP is talking about the reserved space for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) / urea filler for promised US diesel on gen-2 CX-5?

Yep. OP is talking about the future use Diesel DEF Filler Tank spout. All 2017-up CX-5 have this same extra "Knock-out" blank behind the fuel door.
