02 Protege, 86 RX7
Ok I bought a 86 rx7 gxl a few months back and had my wife and dad pick it up while i was deployed to iraq. My dad cranked it a few times while i was gone and said it cranked fine just smoked quite a bit (my dad kept saying it was because it was missing some of its exhaust) and when i finally got home, and it had issues cranking and white smoke would come out the exhaust that smelled like gas, and sometimes it would crank at all... wat is up with that? Im new to rotories and i would appreciate ALL the help I can get thanks....

sounds like leaky injectors.Theres a fuse under the hood for the injectors or ecu fuse.ill have to go look at mine.B ut if you pull that fuse crank it a little then have someone put it in while you crank it, it should start.

Need a lot more information to diagnose the problem. Mods, recent tune ups, etc? White smoke makes me think coolant seal...

I has no mods, yes it has had a tune up.If it is a coolant seal why would it smell like gas?

Yea Ive done it and it works. But that has to be done almost every time to crank it..

rotaries smoke and smell like petrol. mine has done it with the engine freshly rebuilt it does get worse on cold days and if it's been more than 5000k's since a service. also wouldn't help that I'm also using 2 stroke.

the smoke will clear when it warms up. read the rx8 stickies here. same factors apply, are you driving short distances? It shouldn't be that hard to crank if it has been running for a while.

Without a video of the smoke and more information it is not easy to diagnose...however,
if you have WHITE smoke and it does NOT stop smoking after warm-up, or gets worse, then
you most likely have an internal coolant seal failure and you are burning coolant
which is a common issue for 86 RX7s.

Also, Rotary engines do NOT like to sit for long periods of time....the o-rings, gaskets,
and seals tend to dry up. Hard to tell how the previous owners treated it.

However, IF the smoke stops after the car is warm, you may possibly just have a LOT of
moisture in the exhaust system and it is burning off. IF you have a different color of
smoke such as blue or black...those are different issues.

Having said all of that...the hard starting is the real problem, and you need to have the
compression checked to see where you are at. IF that is low, then it won't matter about
any of the rest of problems. All in all, it sounds like time for another engine...but I hope
for your sake it is something else.....

BTW....I have owned 9 RX7's over the last 15 years or so....they are great cars, but like
most things that are good...they require a good bit of care. :)

Next time it refuses to start, pull a spark plug and see if it is wet. If so, what does it smell like (gas or coolant?)?

If gas, then you probably have leaky injectors. If coolant, than a bad internal seal.

If it turns out to be coolant, then you need to rebuild the motor. Or, you can do what I did, which is use a product called Alumaseal. It is an aluminum based radiator sealant, and it fixed my issues within about 30 minutes. I've got nearly 20k miles on that motor since, and have never seen a trace of coolant loss. No other issues associated with its use either, like a lot of other products (clogged lines, clogged heater core, etc.).

Good luck. :)
