Purchasing a MX-5

I am coming from a 2.0 Golf (100hp or so) and I drive about 150 miles to work 3-4 days a week and test drove a MX-5 yesterday. My brother, 03.5MSP is an avid Mazda enthusiast and told me to give the Miata a shot, despite the specs sheet. I test drove the hard-top automatic since I figure it is a little more convenient for my commute. I immediately test drove the new GTI afterwards and while it has more pull (not surprised), but the driving experience of the Miata was so much better and more memorable. (Not to mention the Mazda sales team was much more knowledgeable about their current and future offerings)

My dilemma is that I feel like a miata is a car that has to be stick, otherwise you're really going against the grain. My second dilemma is which MX-5? The new 2013 club sport looks great but with the 2014 model on the horizon and speculation of a 160-200hp turbo with 2,200 lbs, I feel like I might shoot myself in the foot if I'm not patient.

I'm hoping the community here is a more helpful than what I'd hear from Vortex.

Thanks everyone.

go here: www.miata.net MUCH more miata information than you'll find here.

with the redesign of the 2013 JUST being released, i imagine we wont see the all new MX5 until at least the 2015 model year.

We should know by mid-2013 if there will be a new generation for 2014. I wouldn't count on it having a turbo but they will definitely put a SkyActiv in it :) This generation of the Miata is now 8 model years old with the 2013. I am expecting the next gen in 2014 or 2015 at the absolute latest.

As others have said check out the ND section of Miata.net and you'll have days worth of reading on all the latest rumors and speculation from knowledgeable people.

Now ive herd from allot of sources that the ND will have a skiactive deasel and wont have a 5spd option

This is a complete guess... But, Mazda is going to announce what car will run their new SkyActiv diesel race engine in Grand-Am in the next couple of months...so I'm theorizing that this would be the perfect time to announce the next Miata for 2014. That said, I don't know if they would ever put a diesel engine in a production Miata.

But, with the slight update that the NC got this year I'm not completely sold on this theory anymore. Why would Mazda go through the trouble only to go with a completely different generation a year later?

Its gonna b interesting...becuz im also hearing that it will b getting closer back to the size of the NA miata

Thanks everyone.

I did go to miata.net and you were right, a lot of knowledgeable people and plenty of responses.

I think I'm going to skip the new gen as it may have its bits and faults which means I won't be waiting 4 years for a Miata.

I'm going to give the Club 6spd MT a test-drive. It has everything I'm looking for except Bose and Xenons but I can live without the Bose. Nothing beats the sound of that engine on an open road with the top down. I suppose I could add the Xenons myself if I really want to.

Regarding the Bose - you won't be missing much. It sounds like crap.
Regarding the xenons - it has projectors, so you could always pop them in later.
