Protege5 RPM, Battery, and Suspension problem

There is no top bolt on the front calipers, just the bottom, which is an 8mm allen. Remove that, and the caliper swings up to gain access to the pads. You do need to slide the caliper off to lube the top pin with a non-petroleum silicon based brake grease though.

You may have been trying to loosen the caliper bracket bolts, which do not need to come off unless you're changing the rotors too. They have thread locker from the factory and can be a bastard to break loose. I prefer a long handle flex head ratchet for those, since you can swing the handle outside the fender and get a good pull on it.

As far as penetrating oil goes, unless you can spray it onto exposed threads, it does next to nothing but make the bolt head slippery.

I do have to change the rotors as well as the brakes, and yes i was trying to loosen the caliper bracket bolts. the brakes and rotors are both rusted badly on the contact surface. But ok, i will be sure to use a longer ratchet to try and get those bolts loose.

I live in upstate NY. I know salt. I get that rotors can have some surface rust. That doesn't consistently make "metal on metal" noise for me. My fear is that OP has severely worn brake pads or damaged rotors. It could be something as minor as a bent brake dust shield, but we should air on the side of caution when providing advice over the internet with problems we can't see. Unless I'm just misinterpreting OP's description of normal braking noise, the brakes should be checked out for rotor and pad wear.

It was the contact surfaces of the brakes and rotors making the metal scraping noise, as the car has been sitting for about over a year. there is alot of rust on them both. It was last registered in '14. and when i first drove it, when i braked, it just had the loudest sound as from the rotors and brake contact. and also that sound when a rotor is out of line or something, like when the wheel is in motion, and you hear the repeating sound, but that went away when i changed the rear right brakes and rotor. but when i drove it after i changed both of them, it didn't make that loud sound metal on metal scraping when i braked, but its still faint from the front. and i was a little upset because the brakes and rotors are literally brand new, but are rusted to s*** on both contact surfaces. I know i can probably get the rotors machined, but i dont know what to do with the brakes. They had the same amount of pad as the new brakes i bought. I had a very hard time with the rear left brakes as i couldn't get them loose to change them, because the bolt was stripped, but i managed to get it all on there. probably wasnt the most proper way but, i was out there for over 3 hours trying to get them in, so had to do something.

some hard braking should remove surface rust from brakes and transfer some pad material to coat the rotors. Calipers on this car are notoriously sticky. It's important to grease and inspect caliper slide pin boots and adjust the rear calipers with an allen key. search around a bit. I've used the Centric Premium rotors with e-coating since August and have had no issues in the past six months.

Yeah i read that hard braking would remove the rust, but it didnt work at all. But they still worked well, except the brake pedal felt mushy before i changed the back two. But now its not so mushy feeling. And i shouldve got them rotors, but its too late, i had got the standard ones. And they work pretty well.

I went through two sets of standard duralasts before I switched over. You should post up some photos. It sounds like things are working better, right?

You need to upload them to a host like Photobucket or Imgur. Once uploaded, you can copy the link from the host and post them here.

If you have a drop box that works as well. I even share them from my phone.
