Protege5 - How many miles have you gone before changing the timing belt?

I just picked mine up from the shop yesterday. I have just under 75k on mine and did it for preventative purposes. I got the belt, water pump and valve cover gasket for $130 from advanced auto and the labor was about $300. Check with the garage you take it to first, some don't like you to bring your own parts.

I'm thinking of buying https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned). These are the brands of parts they use:
Featured Product Brands:
Timing Belt: Bando, Contitech, Mitsubishi,
Tensioner: GMB, Koyo, NTN
Water Pump: NPW, GMB, Aisin, Paraut
Drive Belts: Bando, Contitech

Are these known quality manufacturers, anyone know?

Thanks,
Rusty

That's a really cool idea but I think it's poorly executed... I don't know any of those brands (besides Mitsubishi) but that might simply be my ignorance of the car parts industry. I know for sure that the timing belt I got from Mazda was made by Gates. I'm not sure who made the water pump (also from Mazda) but we've seen a few people complain about failed aftermarket water pumps so I'd buy from a reputable vendor.

I'm almost at 91k and I'm contemplating whether or not I should do it now. Although the manual states 105k it should be changed, has anyone heard of the belt breaking before that time?

I heard Bando and Mitsuboshi are top quality belts, and OEM for Japanese cars.

The guys at the local Mazda dealer said it wasn't necessary unless they feel gritty. They said that they rarely changed them when doing timing belt jobs.

So how long do they last then? Mazda wants alot for these pulleys, but on rock auto you can get a gates kit for $130 with belt and pulleys. Are the gates pulleys inferior to the OEM? If people aren't replacing stock pulleys would it be a problem to change to the gates pulleys just to be on the safe side? It should last at least 100k right?

I* think a few pages back someone said that the belt they got from the dealer was a Gates. Also, there was one car that had about 160,000 or so with the original belt so who knows how long they'll last. I think it has more to do with weather and driving conditions than anything else. If you live somewhere that has extreme hot/cold temps than you might want to change it sooner than if you live in a mild climate.

It stays near 100 all summer in SC, and I have driven mine like it's stolen since I bought it. Only 74K but 9 years is a long time to punish a rubber belt. The outside belts are cracked. I'm pussyfooting it until I get her fixed up. Finally fixed my clunking noise. After replacing leaking struts, it turned out to be a stripped bolt in a ball joint.

Damn, it's kind of cool all of our cars are falling apart.(stash) I haven't been to these forums much in a few years, it's nice to get to hang out again. (drinks)

My last P5 had over 160k miles before I changed it. It still looked good when it was removed. The P5 I have now has 158k miles and it hasn't been changed. I bought the kit, just haven't changed it yet. I'm not really worried about it.

I have no idea how long they last, if you want good info call your local Mazda dealers. I'm sure the longevity of those pulleys has a lot to do with the environment that they're used in so your local Mazda shop would know best.

I think going with the gates parts would be fine, they're prolly exactly what you get from Mazda (another thing you can ask about!). Like I said before, the timing belt I got from Mazda had GATES printed on it.

This is the reply I got when I inquired about the quality of the parts in https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned) that I mentioned a few posts above:
The timing belt is Cont-tech, water pump NPW (Nissan Product works of Japan), seals and v/c set Stone or Hierosi of Japan, the tensioners are GMB, NSK or SKF and the drive belts are Bando made in the USA.

Looks good to me. I think I'm going to get out the plastic and go for it.

Sounds good! I spent a little less than that on the water pump alone, Mazda parts are such a rip-off.

Sometimes broken belts look great everywhere but the point of failure. You can't really judge it by that.

hey if anyone can add send some advice my way i'm having trouble getting the crank pulley off... is it bad that even in gear if i use a breaker bar or even just a 3/4 ratchet the pulley will move as i try to turn the bolt holding it in... does that mean the clutch is shot? cause the clutch supposedly only had about 20k miles on it. i'm trying an air impact gun but so far no dice breaking it loose
