2003 Mazda Protege 5

I just bought a 2003 Mazda Protege 5 with 89,000 miles.

Took it to a mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection....and he said the only thing it really needed was an air filter.

But I don't know much about cars and I don't know how thorough his check was....

What maintenance typically needs to be done at 90-100k?

Welcome! (hi)

If I were in your shoes I would budget in the basics...Oil change, replace belts, new spark plugs + wires, air + fuel filter change, tranny fluid change as well as an alignment check and make sure your tires are properly inflated (according to manufacturer specs).

Also check how much life you have left on the tires, brake pads and shocks.

I'm sure there are other things to check/replace if anyone wants to chime in on that...Good luck, enjoy the forums and be sure to post some (pics)

when I bought my p5-2002/110K miles, this is what I did changed:
coolant
transmission
brake fluid
engine oil
New plugs

I did not need to change air filter, it was good

Welcome!

My advice, make a copy of this and put in you're glove box, you'll need it frequently, also don't carry two dongles in your pocket at the same time, they seem to wipe each other out (especially when you have two protege's lol)

I have hit 110k miles on my 2002 P5. I am planning on taking my car into get a tune up. What should I expect to be performed? They change spark plugs and the spark plug wires? Is that it? Is that what a "tune up" for this car is? (Note, I have already done my timing belt, water pump, flushed engine coolant, replaced radiator hoses.) I'm specifically interested in what a "tune up" consists of.

If you have already changed that much then your tune up will consist of spark plus, oil, filter, inspect suspension, bushings, top off fluids, and probably a couple other things.

Really, just get some spark plugs, change your oil and filter, check your suspension bushings (i.e. sway bar bushings, tie rod ends, etc), top off your fluids if needed, and grease your guides where your doors open. No point in paying the dealer to do this unless you don't have the time or a spark plug socket.

I usually grease the guides, WD40 the latches, and spray some graphite in the locks every fall.

What transmission do you have?

Automatic Transmission. To the best of my knowledge, the Trans has never been flushed/refilled. Yeah, I do need to get the suspension inspected...I have a "knocking/bumping" noise coming from my front driver side when I go over bumpy roads. Bah! Lord knows how much that's gonna cost me.

What do you guys recommend for oil? I've heard of people using both 5W-30 and 10W-30.

5W-30 is what I have used in both my P5's. Then again, I contend with colder winter temps. Since you are in Tx (guessing anyway), the 10w-30 might be a better fit. You can post in the Texas forum to get some better local advice!

Jiffylube sucks. They just use some cheap filters or crap from Mexico. I went there for oil change once. The oil filter was broken and caused oil leak from the engine. Suck ass big time!

oil type

Just read the manual today. Almost no difference between the two (5-30 and 10-30) just 5-30 goes down to -20F or more whereas 10-30 only good till -10F'ish. These are the only two noted in the owners manual. I would definitely recommend an oil that has smaller gap between hot and cold viscosity. Read it somewhere in a tuning book. I would run straight 30 if it was warm enough all the time but thats not Idaho. Changing my oil today using 5-30 and add some Lucas oil stabilizer to try softening the rod knock at start up.

2003 Protege 5 88k km - Sputtering and Stalls Out

Hey everyone,

First time poster here. Just wanted to get some feedback (for ammo) before I go to the garage. I am pretty uninformed under the hood.

This doesn't happen all the time but recently, and now more frequently my P5 is stalling out when I come to a stop. Idles and revs to about 2-3k rpm at a when trying to restart after a stall out doesn't turn over right a away. Check engine light came on the other day as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
NickoBeh

First thing you should do is find out what the cel code is. Go up to autozone or whatever your local auto part store is and have them read it. My guess is a failing 02 sensor

Lol just was quoted $900 from my local mechanic for a timing belt change, this included water pump replacement and valve cover gasket replacement. Thought it was a bit spendy but including the water pump cost/labor is probably another $300 to the bill. Good diea to replace the pump at that time or not? I haven't heard much about protege water pumps. Are they prone to failure?

Just dug up an old email with the part numbers for the larger oil filters I use, if someone could add this to the sticky I think it would be helpful. Usually I can get a package deal on synthetic oil and a purolator pure one filter (sometimes they package the lower end purolator filter in but the lady at the counter let me return it for the cost off the "pure one" filter last time)

this is the normal recommended one for the P5 (prolly the same for all proteges?)
PL14612 - http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/resources/Popup/Pages/PartDetailPopup.aspx?partnum=PL14612

this one has the same thread size and fits on our car but is a deeper filter with more filter media, meaning you can run your oil for just as long or longer while retaining proper filtration
PL14610 - http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/resources/Popup/Pages/PartDetailPopup.aspx?partnum=PL14610

so yeah, same thread, valve psi, OD, etc but taller so there is more filter media inside. You can usually get them at the auto parts store for like $6.50 sometimes online for like a 3 or 6 pack at like $15~30.
