New member, on the East Coast (commute regularly between NY and New England). 1999 Protege ES, 1.8L DOHC engine, 4-speed Auto tranny... no fooling -- it has 399,000 miles on it (as of early April, 2013). ORIGINAL engine and transmission; heads have never been off it. Never had any transmission work, other than changing fluid and filters. Obviously, regular maintenance, including timing belt/water pump changes. Only thing that has gone wrong unexpectedly was a check-engine light for a blown intake manifold gasket, at around 75,000 miles (a long time ago!). Otherwise, it's been by far the most reliable car I've owned. Due to go over 400,000 miles later in April, 2013. Bought the car brand-new on December 30th, 1998 (new 1999 model), and have driven it pretty regularly since. Looking forward to being part of the High-mileage Protege team!

400,000 miles and counting

Update... went over 400,000 miles yesterday. Ironically, I find out today that my OTHER car, a 1997 VW Passat with VR6 engine, is ready at the repair shop -- for $1900 US. Yikes!

2003 Protege5 just turned over 200,000 miles on Sunday, just a few feet before a commuter parking lot where I was able to stop and take a picture.

Unfortunately, my phone camera doesn't seem to like my dashboard. I have some pics but they're all blurry.

2003 LX with 111k, rust on passenger bottom and driver's bottom doors. coated with por-15, seems to have held up. This car has pissed me off the past two months of owning it...between catastrophic wheel bearing failure in both wheels, Other than that, just maintenance on it including sway bar links, bushings, brakes, oil change, front struts (they were only 39.00 on rockauto!) and a outer tie rod end to tighten things up.

Nothing beats my 1999 protege. its uglier than sin gold with the bright tan interior, its a 1.6 lx with non working ac, one broken motor mount, and a new clutch at 173k (original one lasted this long.) now car has 186k, starts every time, and the original, rusty, greasy stock monroe struts still ride decent. funny how my older protege rides nicer than my 03 lx. hmm.

can't complain though..these are the best cars i've owned.

I'm back with a small update.
2000 Protege LX 1.6L
200300 miles now but the car has the dreaded 0402 and 0302 codes that I can't get rid of.

Inherited my sister's 2001 Mazda Protege LX 2.0 now at 170k. I was in the car when it rolled off the lot.

Never a problem or needed major service until a recently. Now it doesn't run :( Hopefully its a minor fix.

Have always liked the way the car handled and glad to have it in my hands but its auto and doesn't have rear discs but I still wanted to track it for fun.

2001 Mazda Protege LX 2.0 Special Edition with 170,121 miles on it
starts on first try and runs like it did out of factory

Another update. 326000kms / 202567 miles.

If I get another year out of the body, I'll be happy. Recently had to replace another seized brake caliper. Still on the original clutch.

Looks like my old car! Sucks that it happens, but consider it cheaper than carbon fiber weight reduction!

Mazda Protege 2000 LX 1.6l 151,486 miles on it just got this car last month at 149,900 miles but right now has the dreaded p0171 engine light code runs rough at idle, need a new rim one is bent clunking at the front thinking its sway bar links and a oil leak at valve cover gaskets at drivers door doesn't open from inside but it does from outside. I plan on fixing these things hoping to get 300,000 miles or more out of this car just like i did with my Ford Taurus.

2003 Mazda Protege5, automatic with manu-matic/tiptronic mode. 200,000 miles, second owner, no problems to speak of (other than the aftermarket stereo rattling around in the dashboard).
