i'm at 45K so I have a long time I bet.....

my father put 165K on his subaru impreza with never touching it.....guess it would have been okay if it broke if the car was driving.

68k still going, no signs of belt wear and slipping.

whta would happen if it did break while driving? Other than the obivious.

well could **** up your motor. if your timing gets off then some valves may get bent and need to be replaced along with numerous other problems

The cams (and hence the valves) will stop moving, but the pistons will not stop. So there is definatly potential for some serious damage.

NO, this is not true. Our motors are non-interference meaning the valves don't open into the space the piston moves. On an interference design the pistons hit the valves, but ours can be wide open and the piston won't touch, you just won't be able to run the engine. Honestly, I think it's smartest to wait 'till it breaks in the interest of saving money :P

It's about as dangerous as stalling your engine...

hhhmmmm? thats what I was thinking when I asked but it seems like there is a mixed review?

I hope you are right. I hate to go to a dealer and change my timing belt. I will drive until it breaks. I love factory perfect setting.

Sorry to bring up the old thread back but can someone confirm this? The Mazda site had some info on other models but nothing for P5. Mine's 2002.

Anyone?

<- approaching 60K miles

nek0,
I would not worry just yet. I got the car when it was at 45K miles and I am currently at 84K miles. I have yet to replace the belt. The manual says 100K replace belt. Hope that eases your mind.

out engines are interference from what i read. better change the belt before it breaks :D

well, just came across this?

Ok then why does it say inspect 60K and replace 105K in the manual? Just a thought.

i have seen a chart from a parts supply company before. the one above might be the same one. it said that the protege 2.0 is an interference engine. the reason it says 60k is because they make money of the parts, and the more often they sell it to you, the more money they get.

I just changed my timing belt a couple of days ago.... now ask yourself if it's interference or not when I turned the cams separately over and over again (after I removed the timing belt) to check the valve lash and the engine is running A-OK after I put everything back together
