Problems with built motor

this is totally normal
of all the engine rebuilds i've done, it always smokes
why? well, you had to lobe the pistons to put them in, right?

also, just to be shure, i always dump a capfull of oil in each cylinder right before the first crank and keep everything lubricated up to the last bolt before the first crank

it smokes like a b**** when it starts, but it wonn't scratch any cylinder wall!!

when the rings settle it should stop smoking...

if you didn't use oil in each cylinder on the first crank, it could also be that you scratch a wall

ok this is kinda embarassing.

One oher thing. I drove it around last night, and then drove it to work this morning. Is it normal for it to burn a little smoke untill the rings are seated? Its just a little and only when you get on it a little. The guys at work said thats not uncommon for new rings especially crome moly ones. Is this true?

Now if i can just figure out why my Greddy EBC isnt working.....

at least its running!

In my 1st rebuild, some honing was done, with new rings, my engine smoked for a few days, prolly for a week or so, after that it sealed...no more smoke. After that it was running very strong.

maybe it wont start because of the clutch/neutral safety switch?

You should have read the whole thread!! As long as the cylinder walls are not scored it should be gone by now!

Any updates?

O'ya!

Car is running great, have about 400 miles on it (its 25 each way to work) just about have it all retuned again. Am not going above 6 psi, so i basically have it tuned up to that point.

Smoking has decreased considerably. Although I was smoking a ton when i let off the gas after boosting, and that was because of a bright idea i had to put an oil removing filter inline from the valve breather to the intake before the turbo. What was happening was there was not enough suction to pull through the filter so pressure was backing up into the valve cover. Left the housing but took out the filter and now its all gone. Just drain the housing every once and a while and all's good!

Ah...one more thing. ''

With the Pauter rods...you WILL NEED to shave a bit off the cylinder skirt...or the rods will hit the bottom of them

Sorry I Dont have a pic of whats needed to be done.

Really? I never shaved mine....hmmm..

The rods will not hit the cylinder skirt unless the pistons are in backwards, but then they'll knock the oil squirters off...

I could not get my rods to touch the sides, I used a line of paint up the sides of them and turned it over several times, no scrathes in the paint. All I know is, I wasnt going to take the motor out and take it apart for a third time so I shaved a little off of the block to be safe.
