Potential MS3 buyer...

Yeah yeah, I know it's FWD but for the price, it seems like a decent value. New, these seem like a pretty good deal. Do they usually go for sticker price, or is it possible to talk a dealer down to invoice? Also, just a quick CL search finds me mazdaspeed 3s with the grand touring package, 4k miles, for ~20k (year 2007).

Basically, I gotta get a car at some point by the end of this summer. I'd like something that feels a little special, isn't your ordinary car (duh, who doesn't), and this sounds stupid, but I'd rather get a car that isn't very common aka I'd rather stay away from the camry, accord, etc. The Civic SI is a bit tempting, but also small. Considering where I'll be going to school (which, as of now, looks like it will be in San Diego), I'll be making trips up to the bay area and back every 8 to 12 weeks. It would be nice to have a some cargo room. I know the MS3 could give me that with the seats folded down.

The last thing I have to include, which is pretty stupid, is that I know how to drive a manual. I've done it before in friends' cars, but it's not something I ever got used to. I haven't driven one in heavy traffic, on hills (like in SF..steep hills), or anything like that. I feel like moving up to a MS3 from my current 95 volvo 944 (automatic) would be a steep learning curve. So, with that said, would it be a stupid idea to get a car like this and just let myself get a feel for it for a few weeks? Aforementioned friends have all departed (face_sad... everyone went to school all over the country).

As for the specifics go, I think I'd like the GT..the stereo system, HIDs, etc sound nice, and if I ever decide to sell the car in a few years, I think I'd get more out of it if it were a GT. As far as color goes, I think I'd be interested in the black, red, or white. My first "mod" would be a visual one, in which I'd get rid of the mazda wheels (not really a fan) and throw on some black wheels (tasteful, don't worry) if the car was red or black. If its white, I dunno what I'd do, but the white looks very clean.

I'd also like to mention that I know I gotta test drive cars to see how I like em, that's a given. I just wanna do a bit of research first, and knowing me..i can change my mind quickly on cars. As for right now, this is a car that tempts me.

Anyways, thoughts and advice? Thanks!

edit: also, these cars require 91 octane or is that just recommended? That could be a huge factor in the buying decision with current gas prices (I saw $4.09 for premium on my way home the other day!)

well i wouldn't bother getting the used 2007 cause some have bad seal. also for 3 grand more you can get a brand new 2008. If you cant drive stick at all, well then idk what you should do, but if you have the hang of it just drive it a bunch till you end up like myself and MANY others on this board. We dont even think about hills or traffic(even though traffic sucks in a manual) the car is great but you should really get a new one for the price

Thanks for the quick reply.

Honestly, I'm a little worried that I'll show up to the dealer, test drive it, and stall right away. That would be embarrassing.

Some other questions I had are what kind of costs would I see being a mazda owner? What are maintenance costs on this car like?

Also, what is insurance like on this car relative to others? Right now, I drive an old safe 4 banger volvo with no turbo or anything so I assume my insurance will see a hefty increase.

Oh, my! Embarrassment = death.

Go drive the car.

yea i just learned stick on this car too, its not hard at all.... go test drive it, that should make your decision pretty quickly!

To answer a few of your questions..

Yes it requires premium 91 or higher.

Yes insurance is going to be higher. Example, I was paying $143 a month for a 2007 Honda Civic si sedan. I'm now paying $193 a month for a 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 same exact coverage.

It's not the easiest manual car to drive due to the touchy clutch but you'll get used to it.

As far as maintenance cost I would say it isn't so bad. If I were you I would change my oil / tranny fluilds to a full syn like AMSIOL. Also, with the car being turbo charged it's recommended that you let it idle for at least 30 secs to cool the turbo are you could just buy a turbo timer.

You will love this car.

And yes the Car looks badass with black wheels!

Thanks for the replies guys.

Haha, I'm not worried about being embarrassed, I make a fool out of myself every day somehow, so no worries there.

For those of you that learned stick on this car, how exactly did you test drive it?

And to the poster above, I love the look of that (but dunno about the front tints + i live in california..illegal, i believe). I'd probably do something similar but I dunno about the chrome lip, I might go all black or a red lip would be nice too.

How often (how many months/miles?) does this car require service? And how much does that cost (minor/major service?)

Thanks again, guys

Don't go to the dealership. Go online and request quotes, you will get a call from their Internet sale department. Tell them you ARE going to buy a MS3 but will only pay invoice. The large volume dealers will sell at or below invoice to make their sales #'s and they are going to get money from Mazda for the sale anyway. Call the dealerships if you want to, but ask for internet sales. The internet sales guy does not work on comission, he gets paid to move cars.
Be prepared to haggle and pit dealers against each other. It took me a week but I got a 2008 Sport model for $500 under invoice. Paid $21,033 plus TT&L. Some on here have gotten even better deals. Good luck.

Scott.

I 2nd 311MS3

I hadn't learned to drive stick until I started looking at the Speed 3 about 4-5 months ago. Since then a friend has been nice enough to let me take his civic hatch 5 speed out once and awhile to get the hang of it. I put about 10 hours total seat time in it to get the basics down. I was a little nervous going to the dealership today for the test drive as some of the guys around here have been saying that it's slightly harder to drive than normal manuals. My test drive went great and had zero problems. We took a real nice windy road and I got to push it a little bit. I'm very impressed, and am going to be picking mine up next weekend.
