Popping out of 2nd gear

So I drive a 2006 MS6 with only 15k miles. I've had this problem for some time and never realized it could be a serious issue. When shifting into second gear (whether downshifting or upshifting), the shift knob bucks and pops out of second gear. However, if I hold the shifter knob in 2nd gear for 1-2 seconds and gently apply the gas after letting out on the clutch, it will not buck out of second. This problem only occurs with 2nd gear and no other gears. I've been told from one dealership that the entire tranny will need replaced and from another dealership that it could be the synchronizer on 2nd gear. Anyone else have this problem or at least know what the true problem is?

Mine actually occured around 7k miles. Bad news is that my warranty is shot. Wonder how much this would cost?

As far as cost, if I had to guess I would say you're looking at a minimum of $1,200. That's a very conservative guess.

$1200 I'm not worreid about, but I just got a quote from a dealership that was going to charge $2400 in labor without parts. Not good news.

I can tell you Mazda dealerships have 10-12 shop hours flagged for just pulling the transmission and putting it back in. I know that from doing my clutch. I would imagine you're looking at another 6-8 shop hours to crack the tranny open and replace any parts.

I have to be honest with you, I think you would be in much better shape going to a transmission shop instead of a dealership.

I figured a general transmission shop may be better. I'm going to check around town tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

Got a quote of $600 to pull the tranny, diagnose the problem, and put it back. Wonder how much a synchronizer costs? Could I have this fixed for less than $1000?

one of the locals had a speed3 with this issue, she ended up having to get the tranny replaced twice because the dealer effed it up...

good luck

not cool. Mine is not under warranty. I'm hoping that this issue will be resolved in a few days and I can have this car sold ASAP!!!

MY car had this issue previous owner the pad on the shift fork fell out or something or other and 2nd to 3rd had issues. The car had less than 19,000 miles on it when that happened. Unlike the WRX I have which Feels way more sturdy this car feels way more delicate Im afraid to do anything really as far launching so I dont.

But I still love it

Well I also had some troubles with the shifter cables about 8k miles ago and had them replaced under warranty. I have had this trouble ever since. I feel like its a cable that is strung to tight. Does this make any sense?

F* that WRX. Hook yourself up some diff mounts, and launch away. I launched 3x in a row today with my CPE rear diff mount and SU rear bone mount only, with zero issues and zero clutch smell. However, I was smart enough to never attempt this with the stock mount! lol

You're having this problem because you sold your CPE fmic ;) lol. It makes sense that something is wrong with the cable itself (or the install of it) if the problem was non-existent before the cable was changed, and then came on and persisted since the cable was replaced. Did you go back to the shop while under warranty to see what's up? Why was your warranty junk? DP?

Well, my warranty is junk now because it expired on April 11 or something like that (48 months). Also, mazda red flagged me when I had to take it into the shop about a year ago because of my FMIC, CAI, and exhaust. So they basically denied me warranty coverage from then on out. SUCKS.

And yes, as best as I can remember, I have had trouble with the second gear ever since they "repaired them" about two years ago. All along, I thought that the cables were overly tightened and that was the issue, considering I've had no other transmission trouble. I didn't think it was a big issue, because, like I said, I just held it in second gear until after I pushed on the accelerator and have never had any issues. It wasn't until I was trying to sell the car, that someone else brought it up. I then decided I should get it fixed, because any potential buyer will think the transmission is screwed up. WHO KNOWS.

That sucks about the warranty man. I extended my btb to 2013/100K miles, but I've carefully chosen mods that I can readily reverse. That's why I went with the TP and not the DP. However, I'm at the point now where I'm not going into the dealer for warranty work unless my turbo burns out, engine blows, or some similar caliber catastrophe occurs. Good to know to avoid dealer at all costs like I have been so far. I plan on leaving IN my rear diff mount, motor mount, and sts, as there is nothing they could say about those. Plus, I got the tech to admit the 1-2 throw was glitchy, but they wouldn't do anything about it. It's the bushing and fluids I think, but I did both and the twm stage 2 sts, and haven't had a problem since.

Sorry to hear of the warranty/2nd gear bs... that sucks. hopefully you can get it fixed easily without too much cost. And Blendercloud and the others were right on... the dealer will screw you on labor. I think they add an hour of labor on if you take a pastery or a piss while at the shop. My mechanic does my work in about 1/4 to 1/2 the time of dealer jobs, and sometimes less. Has saved me a bundle. Good luck, and let us know how you make out.
