Poor Shifting

I've noticed over the past few weeks that I've had my P5 that shifting is very inconsistent. On a cold morning 2nd is very notchy, on a warm day I've gotta use more muscle to get it in gear, after I've been on the highway depending on the weather it tends to get better (but not always)...

I've been searching around and it seems that the rear motor mount and the shifter bushings are to blame. Since I'm cheap and lazy I think it would be a better idea to change out the shifter bushings and maybe save the motor mount for another day. ucMP3 already pointed out to me in another thread that it's #3 on this diagram that has to be replaced, but there are 3 different types of bushings there so I thought I'd make sure.

I'd like to know which bushings need to be replaced, where can I find them and what type should I get? I've tried searching but can't find any real answers to these questions.

I have somewhat the same problem but I noticed that I have no problem shifting it into gear if I shift at the right rpm and the right shifting speed (not super fast that the syncros get damaged or super slow that the gears "grind").

2750rpm is a good spot on my car for 1st gear shifting into 2nd.

Warm or cold that rpm is a good place.

So, should I buy the stock bushings? Or is there a good particular brand?

I've noticed the same thing, I have to shift pretty at pretty low RPMs to avoid the notchiness, or if I shift super slow it works too.

lol i have nothing to do when driving 40 minutes in traffic to my college every day

I'm in the process of getting a short shifter kit. I cant really point you in the right direction because I am honestly overall pretty new to mechanics.

I'm guessing you can by the polyurethane bushings or the bronzeoil bushings.

EDIT:dont shift too low. keep it above 1900rpm and under 3500rpm. the smoother the shifts the better

I had notchy shifts also. I got under there and sprayed some Jig-a loo fluid on the shifter linkage and it made a huge difference. Redline MT90 in the gearbox helped also. Especially in the cold weather.

You shouldn't ever use more force when shifting. If it won't go, you're just gonna break something by using more force. There are some good techniques for lining up gears better, if your synchros are struggling. Being slow & easy on the trans is the best way.

New Trans fluid and new bushings are the easiest things to help it. New motor/transmision mounts may help also. Check them for tears, as this can cause missed shifts because the transmission is moving as you are trying to shift.
