Poor mileage

I seem to be getting poot gas mileage lately.
I have a stock 2001 protege LX 2.0. 15" winter tires on now, 30lb pressure.
It has about 130,000 (80,700 miles) km on it.

I just had a new timing belt done and my plugs were checked by Mazda and seem fine to them. The issue was before I got my timing belt done.

I filled my tank full and my light just came on after 415km of driving, mostly highway. That's 257 miles according to my calculator. That sounds really bad, what's average?

wow...thats pretty bad. Try running some seafoam thru it. Made a huge difference in my idle & gas mileage. If you search Seafoam, there are several recent threads about it.

What fuel injector fluid do you guys recommend? I drive a little aggressively and usually always fill up after my gas light comes on so my lines might be a little dirty. I've never used any additives.

People mention Sea Foam, what's that?

I did some math today, my car should be getting 25 mpg/40 km/gallon.

I'm getting 415 km per completely filled tank which I believe is 257.8 miles per tank. (17.7 miles / gallon).

Help.

Well, try a few different ideas. Change the air filter, try sea foam, be a little less heavy on the accelerator, etc. Troubleshoot, as much as possible, until you find the right combination.

Seafoam is the key....well at least it's a start.

your injectors could be cloged as well, cause more flow of gas, sea foam is a start, maby your air box is clogged somewhere, i use injector cleaner every other tank (all kinds are the same to me) and it got atleast 70 kms more to a tank, and helped the throtle response, post back with detals, good luck!

it seems like we all are getting poor gas mileage! i have a 03 Protege, with 87,000km runing on dealer oil and filter. last week i put a short ram intake in, and it eats gas like CRAZY! in 2 days i'm almost at half, i'm running out of ideas on what else i could do to get better gas mileage. i dont know if i should get the dealer to clear the injectors they call it a (major emission servies) they said it should be done around 70,000KM what do you guys think? have any of you ever got this emission serves?

i have never gotten an emission service, i just run lucas oil injector cleaner every other tank, it seems to work, with it i get about 650 to a tank (being light on the pedal that is!)

Sorry dude. Adding a SRI does not make your vehicle consume MORE fuel. Maybe you just like the deep sound it makes so you have a heavy foot. Hehe.

I love "speed" i like driving fast!! i think all of us do. i just noticed a drop in fuel with a sri vs my K&N drop in filter. i drive about the same and i lose more with the sri. its it a good idea to add fuel injector cleans every time i put gas? well not every time, maybe evey 3rd time...

dont forget to limit your mpg a lil bit for cold weather. I saw a lil drop in mine due to the fact I like letting the car warm up first (paranoid about the whopping 3 qts of oil circulating poorly). We've also been getting high winds as well, which makes the car work a lil harder for the same speed.

When my O2 took a poo my milage tanked. It did not throw a CEL for a while even though now I realize the O2 was acting up before the CEL.
I could clear the CEL and drive for a day or two before it came back on even though obviously the O2 was bad. It seemed to run normally for a while but it got increasingly worse as time wore on.
If you do have a bad O2 get it from o2sensor.com. DAYUM the stores wanted 270-293.00$ for a new one with the connector. I got one from o2sensor.com for $99.00 (connector included) with free shipping and it came in in two days. Runs great too. :)

I normally get 400-440 miles or so out of 12 gallons. I drive about 104 miles per day. All of my mods: bigger turbo, FMIC, Injen, MPI, J&S etc. don't affect my milage provided that I don't smash the throttle too much. Funny thing is my milage improved some after it was retuned with the MPI.

edit: Just read the part about your belt.
Hmm I wonder if they got your belt a tooth off when they reinstalled it? The timing being off could be a real issue even by a small amount.
