Pictures of frame-off 1200 pickup restoration

Yeah, we've actually seen worse stuff believe it or not! Plus I love a challenge.....

This is pretty rough, but at least its all there which is a huge help. We will have to fabricate all of the floor pans and rockers. The rest is just heavy surface rust. Normally I wouldn't do a job this extensive, but given the rarity of this vehicle, it will be worth it in the end. I figure a year total to finish.

I had an old friend who used to restore race cars from back in the early teens and twenties. In those cases, you just fabricate everything as it isn't available. With enough time and patience it can be done.

Keep a watch for the pics.....

I wish you weel on this Project . You have alot of panels to fab to replace the rust . Its going to be really nice once it is done

Mazda sales brochure

A small piece of information has come my way regarding the 1200 pickup. On Ebay I was able to find and purchase a Mazda sales brochure from the 1969 Turin Italy automobile show. It is written entirely in French, but it shows the entire Mazda lineup for 1969-1970. This predates my Mazda by a year, but there is a Mazda 1000 pickup that looks identical to the 1200 series. There is also a lot of other mini buses, trucks, and cool looking cars as well, including the Cosmo. I will try to get it scanned and post the pics here in the near future.

Awesome find (thumb)...This is really turning out to be quite a research project as well! I would love to see scans of the brochure...How much did you end up paying for it?

I ended up paying $30 for it, but seeing as how its the only reference we've found as of yet, it was worth it. Actually though, the truck in the brochure is a Mazda 1000, but it looks identical. I assume it has a 1000cc engine. Real powerhouse. Grrrrr.......

More info found for 1200 pickup

A big THANK YOU to member mspMee for helping to locate a service manual for the Mazda 1200.

He forwarded me a link to a book dealer in New Zealand, who had an original copy of the Mazda service/shop manual. I contacted them and they have it on its way to me!

Still, welding away here........

I've been reading this too...amazing project :) should be a 1 of a kind when done

Got the Tech Manual today!!!

Hi All,

Another update on the 1200 pickup project. I recieved the Technical Manual today from New Zealand. It looks like new and covers all of the mechanicals of the truck. Its an original Mazda manual. Now to complete the package I need the body manual. (RTM)

The truck is progressing along and the floor pans will go in in the coming week or so, then I will begin the sealing of the seams and start on the rocker panels.

I have also located and have in my possession an NOS engine gasket set, and the rear brake shoes. Next to come will be the front and rear wheel cylinders.

I will be posting more pics in the coming week.....

Thanks for everyone's input and help!

Randy

You may have to crossmatch parts you need with others that will fit and do the job required , ,Wheel cylinders from a newer mazda may work . wheel bearings can be sourced for a bearing supplier as long as you can read the number stamped on the bearing . Other Mazda parts may fit as well . if you find something that fits add the part # to your repair journal .

That is exactly what we plan to do! Actually, the mechanical part shouldn't be as hard as the body repairs. Glass is one item I am more worried about than anything. Its all good now, but if it does get damaged, thats a hard item to fabricate!

As far as the windows go you should be able to get them from any good glass shop . they may have to be custom cut however

Original Shop Manual Available

Hello Randy,

I hope the restoration is going well.

While my contact at Mazda Canada was unable to provide me with details of your model truck or a contact in Japan he was able to send me an original (oil smelling) Mazda 1200 hard plastic cover shop manual. It does say its for a 1200 Sedan, Coupe, or Estate (wagon I believe)

I assume this would aid you in the restoration as I assume that everything between the pickup and sedan are probably the same in way of mechanics. How do I get this item to you. If you need any particular section urgently I can copy and fax it to you.

Best regards

Max

(bump) for progress. This is a really neat rebuild.

Very nice score on the manual, Max.
