Pictures of frame-off 1200 pickup restoration

Scan of 1200 brochure

Here they are! The scans of the 1200 sales brochure. It came from Australia and shows many details. The only difference in this truck and the one in the brochure is the headlights and the column shift.

Any news on the build?

Haven't had an update in over a month, just wondering.

It's funny how much the profile of this truck looks like the POS Toyota P/U my dad picked up while I was in high School.

There's no such thing as a POS Toyota P/U.

Hello everybody,

Sorry for no updates in a while.

The project on the 1200 is moving along and the cab is nearly finished. The rust repairs in the back corners were a bit more extensive than originially planned, so that drew things out some. As soon as the last corner panel is welded in I plan on posting some more pics of the work.

Parts locating has still been going on too, and so far I have found some NOS taillights, a few more engine parts (rings, bearings) and more brake parts too. All that stuff has been via ebay, and I also found a guy in Australia who has lots of old NOS Mazda parts. Mostly Rotary stuff, but some parts will interchange.

Next step will be the bed, and then finally the mechanicals. THe bed shouldn't be as much work, as it is mostly surface rust and won't require any major fabrication.

Keep a watch for some photos coming soon!!!!

Randy

I have a customer with one of those ^^ that has a diesel. It has about 400,000 miles on it now and still runs like new.....

Yah I love those smaller older trucks. My dad had an old Datsun pickup that he put 300-400,000 miles on and it still ran great except for a batterie that needed to be replaced.

Yeah, I agree. You can't buy a small pickup anymore.....Everything now is at least mid-size and comes with all the power options. Heck, you have to order rubber floormats and vinyl seats, if you want to work a truck.

My first vehicle was a 75 Datsun 620 pickup. If it hadn't rusted away, I'd probably still be driving it.

Thanks for the update Randy...I'm looking forward to see pics of your progress! Are you going to restore/rebuild the engine to stock or slightly upgraded/modified?

71HP FTW.

OHV inline 4? WTF?

Still here, just very busy!!!

In answer to Antoine's question; I'll be rebuilding the engine for sure. It has no compression right now. I plan on keeping it pretty much stock, but if possible, an electronic ignition conversion, some carburetor upgrades, and whatever else I find along the way that could stand being brought up to todays standards without altering the outward look and feel of its originality.

Keep holding for the photos, they are on the way!!

Progress and Pics

Hello Randy,

Hope all is well. How about some newer pics and progress. Were you ever able to find out if any of your connections had any RX4 parts of OEM New Old stock or by the other brand you had mentioned Beck Arnley NOS.

Can't wait to see the progress.

Best regards

Max

Didn't drop off earth.....

I'll bet everyone thought I'd dropped off the earth!

Well, I haven't and did back-burner the 1200 pickup, but now that things are back on track, I will be updating a bit more as I progress.

To make a long story short: I have been running a motorcycle business for the last 8 years and the last two years and it expanded and took a new direction, into totally doing higher-end restorations. With new equipment acquisition, facility expansion, new employees, etc, that left little to no time for personal projects, and as such, the pickup got pushed into a corner literally. Good news is that the business is wildly successful, and self-sufficient to the point I have weekends a bit freer now. Whew!

As for the pickup, it has been stored indoors, well organized, and preserved, so no further deterioration has occurred, and now the time is right to bring her back out for some well-deserved shop time. In the next few weeks I will be sending the bed out for sandblasting, and finishing the cab floors and corners. Pictures will follow and be plentiful in quantity and hopefully quality (!) ......All this while I have been slowly accumulating parts and squirrelling them away.

Thanks for all who asked, and kept this thread alive, and I promise this time you'll see progress until finished!

Awesome! Glad to see you didn't bail on us.

Where in "central" VA are you? My folks live on Lake Anna, about 1/2 way between Fredericksburg and Charlottesville.

Good luck with the continuing project!
