So far so good, easy to use, but it is time to go read the manual (RTM)

Nice to know we can get that console piece. How much was it and from where did you obtain it? Very interesting indeed. I have NAV OEM, but the idea of upgrading the head unit, iPod support, video player and then only needing monitors in the back, rather than full dvd players/monitors makes a nice package.

Very nice install.... what did it cost.

I paid $880 for the D3, and $160 for the double din dash and harness, so $1040 out the door.

Nice install. Now, did the harness you get help keep the oem clock running ?

The harness included with the double din kit is just a simple mazda harness that plugs into the factory connector.

The Mazda5 does not have a intergrated clock with the headunit, so the clock still functions as normal. Such is not the case with the Mazda3 headunit. (hand)

One nice thing that the harness kit came with was a single pink wire with a molex type pin. This wire is installed at the back of the speedometer cluster into the factory mazda molex instrument cluster/speedometer harness. This is what sends the vehicle speed pulse to the navigation system. I imagine that if your Mazda5 has factory navigation, there is already a wire here for the same purpose?

On another note, make sure you eject all of your CD's from your factory unit before uninstalling! (smash)

I forgot to do this, and while I was proudly showing the wife the newly installed navigation unit, trying really hard to get the WAF (wife acceptance factor), she says "Put one of my CD's in." DOH!

Well, not wanting to rip the car apart to just pop out 6cds from the old unit, I figured I would just "hotwire" the headunit with my 12v battery charger, and do it that way. (no) Well, a short time later, after a smell of burning circuit board, and a brief puff of smoke, I realized I touched the wrong pin.(sssh)

After disassembling the factory headunit, which I figured was toast, I realized that there was no way to eject the discs without the unit working.

So now I moved on to finding and repairing the burnt circuit, and doing some soldering to jumper the burnt circuit board.

I had the unit back together in about an hour. I then called the wife in to press the eject button, and grab all the discs out as I now VERY carefully hotwired the stereo. Yeah! 6 CD's magically appeared from their captivity.

Moral of the story: Press the eject button before you disconnect the unit.(thumb)

Thanks for the link. I didn't notice the LCD screen all lit up and basically blank. Too bad that can't be wired to display the owner's name, or date, etc rather than being totally blank. Does the AC still display on the screen? Temp, etc? Where's that little guy in the chair to show the vents? That kind of dampens things a bit for me. At least I know there's a dash kit around if I ever feel tempted enough.

The LCD still functions the same way, I just happened to have it off when I took the pictures.

The ONLY difference with the LCD display, is that the radio/cd information no longer appears on the LCD display. The clock, and climate control functions and appears on the display as normal.

I do not think I would have done the upgrade if I lost the clock and climate control display.

It would be really cool to change the hello message, and replace the unused CD/radio area with a personal or custom message, but these are controlled by the ECU. (bang)

im looking into getting one of these with my tax return. was it just one harness to connect, like all aftermarket HU?

Basically, yes. However in addition to the factory harness connection, the Avic-D3 requires several other connections to be fully functioning. The VSS, Reverse, and Parking brake connections.

For the VSS, I tapped into instrument/speedo cluster.

For the parking brake, I grounded this so the D3 is fully functioning when moving.

The reverse connection is needed if you have a reverse cam, and helps the nav unit know what you are doing. I did not hook the reverse wire up but rather I connected to the HU side, and left the extra 10 feet? (of wire and resistor thingy that comes with the D3), bundled under the cig lighter behind the dash. I will run this wire when I get the reverse license plate frame, because I will have to run video wire from reverse cam to HU then.

The next project will be getting the $50 PAC-SW interface so that I can get my steering wheel controls back. I did not want to do this or the reverse camera until I was certain that I liked the Avic D3 enough (read: W.A.F.), to justify itself, and another $200 between the PAC, and camera.

Another thing I tried to capture in the pics is the abilty to change the illumination color to exactly match the rest of the dash. Very Cool!

PAC makes the SWI-PS that lets you integrate the steering wheel controls to that Pioneer, because I believe that deck has an input for a wired remote control.

Ah, I see. K, that takes some of the sting away. LOL, hell, open up the LCD screen and screen print permanent letters there MAZDA 5 or something in digital letters :)

OK now you have gone and done it, giving me more ideas!(gun)

A "MAZDA 5" printed on some vinyl-cling material would work nicely!
