the head screws into the centershaft...

Unscrew the head.

Take off low angle adaptor on the bottom of the centershaft.

Remove the centershaft.

'Plug' the adaptor into the tripod legs.

You shouldn't have to buy anything extra...you should already have everything you need.

Nope. I don't have that adapter on mine. Just a rubber plug on the bottom..

Is that all? What the hell is seperating the $20 from the $200 models?

Should I just get a cheap one?
adjustability/materials made from and yes.

The same theing that seperates a $80k Mercedes from a $20k Honda

Don't skimp on the tripod, the cheap ones are *very* frustrating to use and are not nearly as stable. A lot of times they are also too short to reach eye level without using the center column (a big no-no)

i'm 5'9", how tall do I need it, I think I'm going to order online, so I won't be able to try it out.

Yeah try looking for one that's as tall as you when fully opened. Bubble levels are nice. I bought a cheap $20 tripod from walmart and I honestly don't have many problems with it... it's not as tall as I'd like it to be, but for $20, it actually beat out an older $60 tripod I had.

Some tripods have two mounting heads with them, which is very helpful if you have more than one thing you would like to mount on the tripod. Also, make sure you have one that can flip vertical so you can take vertical shots as well.

A tripod comes down to personal tastes. go with what you feel most comfortable using. I'd say if you're just getting into this, grab the $20 tripod from wal-mart. Does everything you'll need, just a little shorter. Learn to use it, get comfortable using it, then buy a really nice one if you're sure you want to pursue photography.
