Because 2nd gear blew out of the 6 speed and rather than spend $800+ on another 6 speed, I paid $50 for a 5 speed.

Makes sense. Do you like the 5 speed gearing better? Supposedly that is one of the complaints about the MSM is the gearing.

That's scary. I wonder if the Colombian didn't put both bolts in? ;)

oh, you're gonna play it like that huh?

I haven't driven other miatas, and Christine may not be a good reference, but the gearing is quite short so it can be a pain at times in the city. I try to be very careful with my tranny, every now and then 2nd won't go in easily but it's never grinded for me, I just back out and try again

It's all that powa!! Remember, that tranny has 160k on it lol. Interesting tidbit about the starter difference!

lulz... I told Evan mine sounded different, here I thought it was because of the battery...

I think putting the starter on took a while... is the flywheel OK?

I was just teasing, Peach. I don't remember who put the starter on. Tim probably installed it with a hammer. You know those Timkos... Again, with the kidding.

I'm just glad you got her buttoned up and didn't have to drive that green bug another day. Though the dashboard flower did really bring out your eyes.

Yeah, the gearing is super short. I've driven mine and another Miata 6 Speed, but had the 3.636 gears in the rear instead of the stock 4.10 gears. So, you can either drop some cash for a set of 3.636 rear gears or find a 5 Speed to toss in. You can even do both if you have enough cash.

Although I think the 5 Speeds handle less power than the 6 Speed.

^^ that, I just googled and it seems no one knows the real reason why the 6spd handles more power than the 5spd. Some say gears, others say case rigidity. But what I found interesting was how it was brought up that the 5spd shifts more crisp than the 6spd. I distinctly remember phen asking if that tranny had a short shifter... I always thought all miatae trannies were created equal... Guess not!

I personally like the 5 speed better, but at the same time... I haven't been able to utilize full potential because the car has had issues (completely unrelated) since the 5 speed swap. There have been a couple times where an in-between gear would have been handy at a weird speed, going up a hill. I don't really like being at 3 psi the whole way up a long hill, even tho I know it's not hurting anything.

I think the reason the 6 speed is supposedly stronger is because it's made by Aisin (sp?). Mazdaspeed transmissions were rebuilt with stronger gears, etc... but monkeys assembled them so 3 out of 5 develop syncro issues well before their time.

If only one bolt was in the starter the whole time, it was probably like that before the swap too. I have a feeling that there was a lot of mystery work done to the car before I bought it. Two of the bolt holes are invisible to the naked eye, and one of them is borderline impossible to get both your hand and a bolt in there at the same time. This, of course, is the one that I used for the 2nd bolt. haha.

Well, after some research done by Amaff, it turns out that the 5 speed gearbox and 6 speed gearbox bellhousings have different mounting points for the starter. This means that the 5 speed cars and 6 speed cars have transmission specific starters. But... you can mix and match, you just can't use all 3 mounting points.

Would have been nice to know sooner, but... at least it still works.

And the circled aluminum tab needed to be cut off to fit into your car.

I got it nice and hot with the grinder, then whacked it with a mallet and it hit your dad right in the face. Hahaha...

It's still in my toolbox. And was it necessary to quote the pic too? Come on, guy. Sorry for off topic banter, Phen.

Hmm, can't see your picture. Photobucket = blocked at work. That's why I like Flickr better.
