Well, it's official! I will have the MPI Tunner shipped out to me Monday. After weighing my options, I think I made the wise choice. Part of me still wants to do the stand alone though.

Maybe in the near future I will take on such a project of being a "shade tree tunner." Thanks for all the support in this endevor! A lot of folks look at engine management as a cut and dry thing with stand alones being the best, and nothing else can compare, but fail to see the big picture. Before I accually understood more about tunning, and what it involves, I would say Stand Alone or nothing thinking that piggybacks were simply inferior. I now know you have to look at it from a point of view of what's best for me. Contrary to popular beliefe, there is really nothing out there as advanced as the OEM ECU's of today. Aftermarket companies just don't have the money and resoureces that car manufactuers have. With that being said, the stand alones are nothing bad at all, and are quite effective in getting more power, but as someone looking to install one, you have to consider a few things:
* Will my car be a daily driven street machine or an all-out race beast? In other words, will my car have the drivability of a stock car, while having the performance I want, or will it have the non-streetable manorisms of a race car. Even if you run a stand alone in parallel mode, some of the control of the stock ECU will be gone leaving me to deal with the task of making maps from scratch. Is my experience up to the task? Do I have time to clime a steep learning curve? Can I handle cold start issues if I use bigger injectors?
*Is the solution cost-effective to what I want to do?
*Do I have a beater just in case of unexpected extended downtime? (I don't!)
*Cost. Can I justify spending in excess of $1K on an EMS that has more functions than I will ever use just to get me the performance a cheaper solution could have gotten me? Am I just buying a Stand Alone because of the appeal of it without knowing the ramifications of my decision? Am I getting a stan alone just because "Brian Spilner" said it was the s***?
A lot of folks don't know that a good piggy back will get them the same, if not better performace for what the want, for a lower price, and a lower cost of time to install and implement. The Xede used by Vishnu is a prime example of how piggybacks are used everyday by big tunners.
All that being said, I still would love to go Stand Alone. I wonder if I can find a way to still be able to do this over the weekend? (scratch)
