pcm reflash

FYI - I got the flash. Word of advice to fellow canehdians who can't get it--don't give up. Terrorrize your dealership. Kidnap the service manager's children for ransom. They will tell you the patch doesn't exist, that it might take a while. Keep insisting it DOES exist. When all fails call Mazda Canada.

At any rate... car feels much fastAr. :D

My post-flash MSP is now falling flat on its face. At 70 MPH (5th Gear), I will floor it and it starts stumbling like it used to when I drove around town pre-flash. :wtf: Do I need disconnect the battery every week or two to reset the ECU?

Alright....

First off, I don't drive a MSP, don't get mad... I have a very important question for our new Mazda tech. visitor. With that said... Welcome to the Site Dealerpersonel!

Alright, I've owned a 2003 Mazda B4000 4X4 pickup for 5 months... Since the 2nd day I've owned it, I've been on a mission to have the speed limiter either removed or raised to something that won't get me killed merging onto the interstate. There are aftermarket solutions to this, but I want the dealer to correct the problem. I've talked on the phone a total of 11 times with Mazda North America, and every time they mention something about how I won't need to go faster than the limiter is set at. Well, unfortunately, being a reserve deputy, I have to exceed the limit pretty damned often. Anyways, on to my story.

When I bought the car, I asked the service manager, who was there talking with me as they prepped the car for me, what the limiter was set at on the truck. He replied, "It doesn't have one that I know of... (He looked at the tires...) These are S-rated, so it should go 110 MPH without any trouble, and the speedometer goes to 120, you should never have any problems, that 4.0L is a strong motor." Ok, I thought, good enough for me, it came from the head guy, I should never have a problem with it. Anyways, I bought the car out of state, and on my way home with it, I had to pass a car on a 2-lane road... I downshift, get into it, and WHAM!!!! It cuts out to an idle at an indicated 90mph. WTF??? Hmm, well, that was fun...

When I get back home... I call my dealer, who has always been helpful in the past, about this problem. He replies that it isn't a problem, and he'd have no way to test it. Ok, fair enough. I get my trusty GPS, Sony Handi-cam, and two officers from the State Highway Patrol and we go and film the damn thing making 4 passes on our academy driving course, posting 4 identical top speeds of 87.7 MPH. Back at the dealer, video camera in hand, I show the service manager the video, all 5 minutes of it. He says, the truck is doing exactly like it is designed, there's nothing we can do. I explain that when I bought the truck, I was told by the salesman and the service manager there, that there was no such limiter. I've talked to a lawyer about the problem, and gotten the preliminary steps taken to take a case to Mazda North America about the situation. Due to this, I can't tell which dealer I've been to, or bought the truck from. It probably seems petty, but s***, I figure them not fixing a damn problem they lied to me about in the beginning is even worse... bleh.

At any rate, my whole point from all this gibberish is this, have you ever removed or raised the limiter in a mazda vehicle? A tech friend of mine said he thought that the values for the limiter can be reset without a full blown PCM reflash, and since aftermarket chips can change the value, I would imagine that would be correct. Anyways, is there any insight you can give me on the problem? Who I can contact other than the Customer reps at Mazda North America? At any rate, thanks for your time, and help with everyone here on the site. We appreciate it!!!
(Sorry to jack the thread guys, but I've tried talking to everyone in the damn state and then some, with no avail. )

Please return to your regularly scheduled MSP session. :)

Not a good ideal man...doing that is going to accomplish 2 things 1) make you have to go throught the wonderful prosess of having to reset all the stuf on that waaaaay to complicated tunes box, 2) if anything if could make it drove WORSE untill it relearns is't program (which by the way will be it's last program, the reflash). DOEs it respone any better in 4th??

Fstdriver.....what kind of rev's you turning when the throttle goes to 0 station?? And is this a man. or auto?

It's a 5-speed, and I'm turning ~3,500 or so RPM's in 5th. I'll have to look on the way home to be totally sure. Also, it will hit the limiter in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear.

What's weird is that is it will drop really harsh down to ~500 RPM's immediately then lower as I coast to an indicated 85MPH, then it kicks right back in full steam. (All of this with the accelerator still fully depressed)

Oh yeah, my name is Will by the way... Thanks for the help and for reading my extremely long winded post! You rock! (rockon)

90 in 3rd, in a B4000?

87.7 to be exact. :p

At about 5.5K RPM's... That thing is geared pretty tall in 3rd thru 5th, as you probably guessed already. ;)

I hate to tell ya this guy............but thats about all she wrote. I was just out talking to one of my tech (22 years with mazda) and his comment was about 85 mph is all your gonna get, the fuel cut of along with vehicle speed are cutting it off. Sorry man........that sucks.

Hey dude, no problem. Thanks for the insight! You've been the only person so far that's even tried being straight with me... The dealer here just keeps telling me to get lost.
That's alright though, with the progress I've made already, the least I'll get is my money back for the truck. So I'm not too bad off. It would be nice to get it fixed though, as overall it's a great vehicle.

After some experimentation, I know what will remedy the problem in a pinch. It is to unplug the VSS in the top of the rear end. The Vehicle Speed Sensor unit is what tells the ecu that I am "done", and after trying it on a used 2002 mazda B4000 Dual Sport at a Lot nearby... it removes the speed limiter, well, that and the signal to the Speedometer. I ran to a clocked 108 MPH where the truck was pretty much done because of drag limitations. It's weird looking down and seeing nothing in the way of guage activity. Thank goodness for my GPS. I have no idea why, but that truck didn't seem to be affected by the fuel cut...

Yeah, the newer 4.0L SOHC seems to have a pretty good top end punch somehow, compared to it's older pre-2003 4.0L kin. The only bad thing about that 208hp--239ft/lb Explorer derived Engine is the gas mileage. ;)

Edit: Good grief I can't spell...

Well guys from what i can tell you all have aready gotten the flash done on your cars. However on 10/6/03 Mazda finally released a TSB so all dealers now have the elusive information. If any one is still having trouble you can now refer to TSB 01-002/03
