tranny probs

I've been having that happen a couple of times!! As soon as I go from 2nd to 3rd, it seems everything just locks-up!!!! And I can't shift into 4th or out of gear!!! I have to do alot of double clutching to get out of gear. The last time I had this problem was just last sat.

I had a few parts of my trans replaced around 20k miles for the clutch chatter.

I (as well as 95%+ of the members on here that have Speeds or MP3's) have the clunk, and it sound like there are multiple board members who are a few steps ahead of any of the dealers when it comes to status updates on any fixes.

feel free to search the word "Clunk" and you'll find hundreds of pages about it. Its been going on for over 2 yrs now. I personally have had 5 sets of bushings, 3 sets of endlinks, and 2 or three new swaybars themselves (because they were so badly worn [down to the metal] from the poor design) I'd say that's a pretty big (and expensive) problem to let go for 2 yrs...

my sway bar is messed? i should prolly get a new one then dayum

ive had TERRIBLE clunk, esp now that we hit below freezing this morning here

Well the only problem I have had with the tranny is the 1-2 shift is sometimes "chunky" it seems to be a part of this trans but all in all it shifts pretty good.

I do have the clunk now after 17950 miles.

answers?

here is the story on the clunk....... the are 2.(clunks not stories) one is conning front the rea sway bar endlink bushings. that is the lesser of the 2 evils. the second is comming from thre rear struts. is mazda working on the strut noise....hard to say... our dealership is part of what mazda calls QMD (Quality Monitoring Dealer). I spent a week in las vegas in june going over tech issues on all the vehicles (and drinking and gambling ) we talked about the clunk and mazda requests more info.. what we do is try to find a fix and let them know. For someone at mazda to be woring on this would kinda be pointless since the are not really in real world conditions.
as for the trans just a warning DON"T SPEED SHIFT the thing we're seeing broken shift forks and mazda gets a little edgey about warranty on that. jsut to let ya know....Oh and by the way warranty on your clutch disc...12/12

Speaking of warranty issues, what can we do to out car that won't void the warranty? I know the whole thing about if they can't prove it directly affected the malfunction, they have to cover it, but what about a turbo timer? I really want to install one to make sure I don't forget to cool down my car. I also want to put in a boost gauge. Will these void my warranty? Thanks.

I don't believe that anyone has had a problem with the strut clunk...everyone who has had the bushings replaced has fixed the clunk for a short amount of time. no changes that I know of have happened with the strut at all.

my clutch, pres. plate and something else were all replaced under a TSB dubbed "clutch chatter". All new part numbers were installed, and referred to as "updated parts" on the work order.

I/we appreciate your coming in here and sharing what you can. We're always starved for more information about when our cars will be fixed...many of us have been waiting for years, and are fearing the end of the warranty period, not to mention, incredibly disappointed with our expenditure of money for something that doesn't work as billed (reason I say that, is as soon as the clunk begins, the rear suspension is not functioning as it should. The suspension is pretty much the bread and butter of the MP3, because we all know speed isn't really there :) ). If styling were the only thing judged, Mazda's on top, but backing up their stuff needs some work.

Please continue to shed any light possible on this debacle.
thanks
Scott

boost gauge will not hurt any thing but any mechanical parts (ie timer) would. As far as warranty goes though MNAO is judge, jury & executioner. If they decide that it caused it, you can do what you want but i'll tell ya, they have alot deeper pockets the we do. But they usually will just let it go. One more thing though, if you do make a/m mods to your rig, you may have trouble finding a dealer to work in it, and a dealer can do what ever they want pretty much. So at your own risk really.

dealerpersonel, thanks for showing up on the board. We know you're kinda busy so appreciate the insights you've been able to give. Please bear with the frustration as many members (heh heh, he said "member" heh heh heb) have been working at these problems for literally years, and so cling to any hope they can get, or vent at the first rep they see. That's not personal, and we know you're not taking it that way.

Thanks also for the trans warning - good information to have. C&D even pointed out in their article on the competition Protege that the trans is a weak link, just have to watch out for it I guess. Every car has its weakness.

Dodge? Well, they took a very capable (but cheap) car and made it better, then came out with hardcore parts to change/improve even that. Mazda, on the other hand, pretty much put the hardcore parts on it out of the box. The Protege isn't as strong as the Neon out of the box, and so can't stand quite the hardcore mods the Neon gets. (sorry guys, that's the way it is - note trans probs and engine size)

Just thought I'd say thanks... you seem pretty decent.

once again, proving dealerships dont know what the **** a turbo timer is.

gee wiz man thanks for understanding what i was talking about earlier....i bet you get alot of help from the dealers with that attitude I for no other reason then to clear myself up let me refrase that " mods that have any effect on mech parts and or their opperation. Thank you!

Thats just it, a turbo timer does nothing other than allow the car to cool down and run after shutdown.

okay, see, lets just use some common sense here:

a turbo timer is an electronic device to keep the ignition on for a set amount of time. just because it has "turbo" in the name, doesn't mean it connects to the turbo, or any mechanical parts whatsoever.

by your statement of: "mods that have any effect on mech parts and or their opperation" , puts the boost gauge itself as more of a warranty voider than the turbo timer, as the gauge has to tap into some kind of manifold pressure line, which i guess, in some wierd far out way, could potentially damage something mechanically (how i dont know).

maybe if mazda is selling turbo cars, they should at least teach thier employees what a turbo timer is.
the reason i sound harsh is because you are here, giving information that a turbo timer is a mechanical part that will void your warranty, when its totally not true and doesnt even make sense based on the definition of a turbo timer. if you dont know what it is, dont assume it will void your warranty.

im also slightly irked that most dealerships will never admit they dont know something, they will practically make s*** up so that they dont look stupid. ive had my car for service for the subwoofer before, (which my allmighty turbo timer somehow blew  ) and the ******* pricks put down "Modifications to turbo wiring". WHAT TURBO WIRING. there are no WIRES that go to a turbo. DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT A TURBO IS?! (jerkit)

turbo timers are such a waste of money  just get used to driving a turbo car and idle for 30secs. or just lay off the boost for the last 2~3 mins while driving the car. ;)
