Passenger Airbag - Slightly Confused

6 happy days spent with my new CX-5 - love the car.
Having read some other threads on here I'm slightly confused about the Passenger Airbag.
Is it normal for the words 'Passenger Airbag' to remain permanently illuminated on the centre display, with or without a passenger in the seat, after the 'On' signs goes out?
I'm assuming it is OK, but was wondering if it might be an indication of an error - This would be the first car I've had where any airbag sign stays on without there being a problem with an air-bag

Thanks

When the light is on it means the air bag is disabled. It should be disabled when no one is in the seat and when a light person is in the seat. For a normal sized adult it should turn off to show that it is armed for deployment.

Did your previous vehicle have this feature but displayed differently? For instance my old vehicle prior to the CX 5, 2005 Mercury Mariner, had the light off at all times. Whether someone was in the seat or not in the seat. It did however turn on when it recognized weight but if the weight wasn't heavy enough to register as a passenger the light would turn on to warn that the airbag would not go off.

Read the manual, do not rely entirely on reading internet threads without the context of the manual. If you have concerns, see the dealer and demonstrate the potential problem.

"To reduce the chance of injuries caused by deployment of the front passenger air bag, the
front passenger seat weight sensors work as a part of the supplemental restraint system.
This system deactivates the front passenger front and side air bags and also the front
passenger seat belt pretensioner system when the front passenger air bag deactivation
indicator light illuminates....

"...Your vehicle is equipped with a front passenger seat weight sensors as a part of the
supplemental restraint system. These sensors are located under both of the front passenger
seat rails. These sensors determine the total seated weight on the front passenger seat and
monitor the seat belt buckle for the front passenger seat. The SAS unit is designed to
prevent the front passenger front and side air bags and seat belt pretensioner system from
deploying if the front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light illuminates.

"To reduce the chance of injuries caused by deployment of the front passenger air bag, the
system deactivates the front passenger front and side air bags and also the seat belt
pretensioner system when the front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light
illuminates. Refer to the following table for the front passenger air bag deactivation
indicator light illumination conditions.

"This system shuts off the front passenger front and side air bags and seat belt pretensioner
system, so make sure the front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light illuminates
according to the following table.

"The air bag/front seat belt pretensioner system warning light flashes and the front
passenger air bag deactivation indicator light illuminates if the sensors have a possible
malfunction. If this happens, the front passenger front and side air bags and seat belt
pretensioner system will not deploy.

"If the front passenger weight sensors are normal, the indicator light illuminates when the
ignition is switched ON. The light turns off after a few seconds.

"The front/passenger air bag deactivation indicator light illuminates or is off under the following conditions:

[the table does not copy well]

Condition detected by the
front passenger occupant
classification system
Front passenger air bag
deactivation indicator light
Front passenger front and
side air bags
Front passenger seat
belt pretensioner
system
Empty (Not occupied) On Deactivated Deactivated
Child or child-restraint
system*1 On Deactivated Deactivated
Adult*2 Off Ready Ready
*1 : If a larger child sits on the front passenger seat, the sensors might detect the child as being an adult depending
on the child's physique.
*2 : If a smaller adult sits on the front passenger seat, the sensors might detect the person as being a child
depending on the person's physique.
The curtain air bag is ready for inflating regardless of the chart above.

"If the front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light does not illuminate when the
ignition is switched ON and does not illuminate as indicated in the above chart, do not
allow a child to sit in the front passenger seat and consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer as
soon as possible. The system may not work properly in an accident."

Thanks all for the replies -
Yes I've read the manual, and the answer to my question isn't explicitly covered in there, hence the question on this forum. As for contacting the dealer, I intend to, but the question was posted on here as the equivalent of asking a 'friend' if their car was the same, as I suspected what I was seeing was normal for a CX-5, but would be odd in a Ford Mondeo, or Vauxhall Vectra or Astra (my previous cars)
Having said that, the extract from the manual pasted by Chas is interesting if only to confirm the US and UK manuals and cars are very different - there's no mention of weight sensors in the UK manual, and therefore no weight sensors in a UK car. On my UK car the Passenger Airbag is deactivated by a physical switch, and would only be deactivated when using a child seat of some sort on the passenger seat for example.
Mine is set to On (Activated), and the two warning lights (the Off and On) both behave as the UK manual states - both come on when ignition is turned on, as well as the words Passenger Airbag. The Off light goes out almost straight away, and the On light stays on for a while longer before it too goes out. This is as per the manual. The words 'Passenger Airbag' stay illuminated so long as the car is running, but this is not mentioned in the manual, and what I found a little unusual and slightly superfluous.
Sorry to have wasted anybody's time.

That is very interesting the differences in the two markets.

I just found the US federal government position on switches

-Vehicles without rear seats, or with small rear seats, such as pickup trucks or sports cars, may have a passenger air bag ON-OFF switch as standard equipment.
-The purpose of the switch in the OFF position is to disable a frontal air bag in order to transport occupants who are at increased risk for air bag-related injury due to age, size, or medical condition.
-The introduction of advanced frontal air bags has significantly reduced the need for the installation of ON-OFF switches.
Because children are always safest in the rear seat, vehicles with enough space in the rear seat to accommodate a child safety seat are not equipped with an ON-OFF switch as standard equipment.
-Consumers who wish to have an ON-OFF switch installed for either the driver or passenger frontal air bag must apply through NHTSA for permission to have an air bag ON-OFF switch installed. See ON-OFF Switch Requests for details.

By the way, I was not trying to be snippy, so I apologize if it came off that way.
