The P5, IMO is the most complete looking car right off the dealership floor. It doesn't need rims or lowering springs, a body kit, or for gods sake a new spoiler....they got it right.
It rarely happens that an automaker does everything right (well, maybe the P5 could use a few more ponies) and for the next model year they are sure to fudge things up by 'freshen'ing up the style they already perfected.
Take the Ford Thunderbird for example....in 83 they introduced the Fox chassis with a killer design that brought the bird back in style. By 87-88 they had perfected the body into a streamlined muscle car that was ahead of its time (if you look at an 87 now, and compare it to other 87 cars such as the Buick GN, you'll know what I'm talking about). Then for 89 they decided to drop the Fox platform and start from scratch. Granted the new MN12 body had a 4-wheel independant chassis and alot of other goodies, but the car was just plain ugly...and they never got it right and ended up scratching it by 97.
I think the Sportif is a decent looking car, but its a step in a new sleek direction for mazda. Its too short and too tall for my tastes. The P5 has all the right dimensions and looks fabulous from every angle. (Can't say that about the Nissan Altima...it has some really ugly angles if you've noticed).
Anyway, that's my $.02
