2002 Mazda Protege5
Hey, I'm new to the forum. I own a 2002, with about 158,500 mi. on it. Recently the Trans started slipping out of 5th, and it also has a minor grind. Mostly in 5th. I was looking for a rebuild kit because I don't have money for a mechanic, and I know somebody who would be able to help me fix it. I have been looking but can't find anything. Was just hoping that somebody here would know where to get one. I love my car, and I want to fix it so I can get back to driving it again. That, and so I can turn attention to other projects for it.

Thank you for your time.

honestly, for the cost of the rebuild components, a junkyard trans might be a more cost effective option for you. also depends ho much down time you want to invest. maybe pick up a junkyard trans just to get the car working agian, might be better, might be the same, but then you can spend some time on the bench figuring out whats bad on your existing trans and fix it in due time.

if its only 5th gear though, a 5th synchro kit isnt too expensive nad only requires you pop off the end plate on the box.

If it's slipping out of fifth, you have a detent or shift fork issue.

I don't know if you can replace those parts through the end cover though.

Thanks for the help, one more question. Does the P5 trans have the speed sensor mounted on the tranny or no?

If your P5 does not have ABS, then the speed sensor will be mounted on the tranny.
I had the same problem on mines. I just replaced it with a 626 tranny that I found at a local junkyard for $250 which if you ask me its the best way to go. I had no problems at all. All you would have to do is switch out one of the plugs from your p5 tranny to the 626 tranny.

Being that the stock Pro5 isn't really the fastest. I'd like to keep some of the pep that comes with the gears in the trans. The 626 has a longer final drive ratio if I'm correct, and if that's the case I'd lose some of the pep. Is that what you'd found, or..? I just would like my car to remain fun haha.

Well unless you do alot of racing in 5th gear, then it doesnt really matter lol it just makes the cruising rpms drop in 5th for better highway mileage

By the time I've wound my car out in 4th I'm already in illegal speed territory. 5th is just for cruising. It won't have an affect on the first 4 gears.

A lot of people (including myself) find that this car revs really high... when I'm cruising on the highway (at any legal speed) it feels like it needs at least one more gear....

I do remember reading that the engine is specifically designed to rev high and is actually most efficient at that RPM.

Apparently,.. the 626 5th gear swap drops the RPM 14% (just for that gear,... as mentioned) which isn't much and if ya needs more pep,.. ya drop it into 4th and hammer it !!

Keep in mind like the MrGiggles said you may not be able to fix your tranny through the end cover anyway...

I did want to ask,... Is your stick shift all sloppy when it's in gear ???

My shifter mechanism was so worn out and sloppy that it was hard to get it in gear. The shifter would hit the housing and "bottom out" before it would completely engage the gears.

Their is a "universal joint" at the bottom of the shift rod (under the car) and another at the tranny.

Not really a noticeable difference. I still have plenty of fun on my P5 daily. The only slight change you might noticed is that on third gear if you redline it it will go up to 89-90 mph and 5th the most you'll get out of it is 122-123mph and that's at around 5300-5500 rpm

After swapping my engine last weekend, there's definitely no way you're gonna be able to get the 5th gear cover off without dropping the trans.

It's been done apparently... Hatch kitten did it... I dunno ??

But it sounds like he needs to remove it anyway because there appears to be more wrong with it.

I didn't try it, but there's about an inch between the frame rail and that cover. Maybe that's just enough room to maneuver it out.

That's the same inch they give us to do a timing belt too..

Apparently more than adequate... ???

So basically, swapping to a 626 trans gives you an AE86 style Super Overdrive gear lol, but a bit less extreme. Oh, and third is longer. Sort of sounds like it's worth doing, especially if I have plans for mods in the future (which I do).
