P5 Tranny Problem...

Had my P5 for just over a month. Tranny needs to be replaced. I posted before about a whinning noise when I give it gas...well Mazda informed me that they need to replace the tranny.

Thank God for warranty!

What was the problem exactly? What caused the whiny noise?

I feel for ya, I had my 1st tranny replaced at 12,000km, the 2nd at 33,000km (just a couple weeks ago).

Mine's a slushbox.
1st problem, only gears 1+2 worked.
2nd problem, Once it got to 3rd it would start jumping all over the place.

What is this whining noise that you are talking about? I noticed a small whine after the car being warmed when I gave it some gas... is that the same as you?

The whinny noise is heard when I give it gas. I have an automatic with sport mode and noticed also that when I stop at a light (in sport mode) the car did not return to first gear sometimes. It also seemed to bounce when shifting gears.

My car has 11,000 kms. No mods yet.

I have it at the dealer today. I will post what they found later. Sounds like this may be a defect since some other people have had similar problems.

My trans seems to be alright except for one small thing, and that is it sometimes sticks in first when accelerating. After a real short time, less than a second of it sounding like it needs to shift, it will. That's the only thing that I can tell, but if it whines or makes other noise, I havent noticed it, or my intake drounds out everything else.

gabee - I think most of our auto's do that from time to time. I know others have mentioned it. Probably more an annoyance than a problem. (computer glitch?)

Hmmmm... i hear some whistling/whining noise when I drive sometimes, but only in the lower RPMs... I can't explain the noise, just a whistle when i push the gas in and/or let the clutch out.... if it does it this week when I take it into the dealer, I'll have them check it out...

Update to tranny problem:

I pick up my car tonight. I took it to a second dealership for another opinion. They told me the same thing...the tranny needs to be replaced. I will post the results tomorrow.

I am a little dissapointed that they are replacing it with a re-manufactured tranny and not a new one.

Mazda Canada says that the dealer makes the decision on whether they use a new part or a re-manufactured.

Interesting... sounds like the sport-matic transmission has seen its fair share of problems with some members from the board. Curious, how often did you use the 'sport' mode? Perhaps the problems are directly related to the use of the feature.

My car was a demonstrator. I can only assume that the sales person who drove the car used the sport-mode a lot. I used it when I first got the car, but the novelty wore off pretty fast and stuck to automatic.

Finally got my car back from the dealer. Good news...the noise is gone after the tranny was replaced. The work order did not give any details...they used a lot of codes which I could not make heads or tails of. Service centre was closed, so I did not have a chance to speak to the Service Manager.

Anyway, all is good now.

I'm still curious... what kind of noise was it exactly? I hear a whiny noise, but not ALL the time... please let me know...

I bought the car from Ajax Mazda.

The whinny noise was heard above and beyond normal engine noise when going apporx. 50km/h or higher.

My rpms would would crazy from time to time.
Sport mode --> when fully stopped, would not return to first gear automatically.

squeaking noise

Hey guys... I know this has nothing to do with the transmission, or I hope it doesn't, but I thought you might know what it is. I've been hearing this kinda squeaking noise out of my car. It's that kind of noise that happens when you bounce on an old truck and its springs are shot...well, you get the picture. However, it only happens when the car is on and usually only when I hit the accelerator. It's minimal. You have to turn the radio off to hear it, but it bothers me none the less...Have any clues??

Yeah, that happens to me, that's why i was wondering if the same thing happened to wyseguy... it's like very small squeal when you hit the accelerator really lightly right?
