P5 Seat Back Cover

OK, I have looked and I haven't seen anything like what I want. I would like to know if anyone has seen a plastic or metal cover for protecting the back of the rear seat. I have two dogs and often carry more than one bike. I would like to be able to mount a pet/cargo separater and possibly a bike fork mount (congrates to the P5 designer on the perfect fit for a bike in the back).

Possibly something with small movable mounts similar to the matrix. It would be easy to mount and would help protect so much. Any idea or info.

Thank

I haven't seen anything either...

but I wouldn't let that stop me. I would remove the carpet that is in the back floor of the car now to use as a pattern. You didn't say if you wanted the rear seat backs up or down, but I'd also make a pattern for them also. Using these two patterns, I'd make a drop in insert with T-tracks in it (much like the Matrix) from 3/4" plywood or MDF. To hold it down is a tough one, but I'd start with the mounts for the floor net straps. Don't forget the two loops on the back side of the rear seats. While these are for rear tether straps for infant and child seats, they should be strong enough for other mounting applications. Bike catalogs used to carry fork mounts for car racks, so that should address keeping the bike(s) upright on the platform. I know it's not an instant answer, but maybe some food for thought.

For the dogs, I just bought a $20 pet car slip cover set made by Saddleman that just slips on and off without all of the hooks commonly used by seat covers. The box proclaims 30 second installation and has both seat and back covers. The pieces have a nonskid plastic backing on them to keep them from moving around on the seat. This was a plus given that our P5 has leather seating. Works great on my cloth covered Civic back seat too. Jim

There is a "cargo mat" (different from the cargo tray) available which fills the area behind the seats. It's very heavy duty, rubber on the bottom side, and carpet on the top with the Mazda emblem embroidered on it. I bought mine off eBay for $35, but any mazda dealership can get you one.

I'd buy two if I were you, and cut up the second one to make custom fit covers for the two seatbacks - Guarantee you nothing will damage the seatbacks if they're protected by something as heavy duty as the cargo mat.

thanks for the ideas. I have the cargo tray, but have not seen the mat.

As far as the back seats, I was picturing some that you mount directly over the existing carpets (resale). Possibly something like a think plastic sheet witht eh edges formed to fit about the curves at the top of the seat. It would also need holes where the seat latches are (hold the seat in place when up) It would have to be two different pieces, one for each seat so you would still be able to work them separately.

I have thought about using medal also. Maybe easier to form to the shape that I want, it just seems like it would look out of place.

I guess while I am at it, I could try to make a custom fit pet/cargo separator. Something that you could fold down against the back of the seat and could fold up when you need it. I have seen some of the separators that they have at like petco. I could possibly use something like that, and then mount it with a hinge so it can fold up.

I don't know. I guess if it was that great of an idea someone would have thought of it and built it already.

thanks for the help though
