P5 Engine Removal Tips

So I'm pretty much ready to pull the engine on my P5.

Before I hook up the hoist and start yanking, I wanted to see if anyone had any tips they could send my way to ease the process.

What I'd also really like to know is if I can pull the engine and leave the transmission and drive components alone.

I could do it no problem on some of my other cars, hoping this is the same way.

Thanks,

it's SOOO much easier to pull the trans and motor as a whole.... this is the way i do it, and will be doing it in a few weeks on my pro 5.

make sure you mark all of the connections/connectors. or at least memorize them.
good luck!!

I usually pull the engine only. Its a matter of angling the block and trans correctly to get the trans input shaft to slide out of the clutch. Same thing going back together.

meh. to each his own. i've done numerous engines. and i'll be doing one in my p5 this coming week or so.. and this is how i'll do it.

yea that would be alot more hassle to get just the engine out
its alot easier to pull it all together

oh and pull it through the top, not the bottom, saves a bunch of stuff from having to be removed

First, anyone know why I'm not getting notification of responses anymore?

Second, if I pull the whole thing, what additional parts need to be removed? I know I'll have to pull the wheels, remove the hub bolts, pup the knuckles, remove the half-shafts. Is that it?

I've had a couple others tell me to just pull the engine, but if it's that much easier of a pull (even with removing the additional parts) then I'll go ahead and pull the whole thing.

Thanks,

Thats why I don't like pulling the whole thing, you almost double the amount that needs to be disconnected or removed. Put a floor jack under the bell housing and angle the trans up and angle the engine down (flywheel side lower) and it will come out easy. Put cardboard over the right strut tower so you don't scratch the paint with the pulleys.

do whatever you want..

pull the tie rod nut off of each side. pull out both strut bolts of each side(4 total)the ones on the knuckle..take off the axle nuts. Pull out both axles(on the passenger side there's 2 ways, either pull the three bolts out of the half shaft..OR pull the axle out of the half shaft) either way... unbolt the 4 motor mounts, and unhook all sensors.. DONe

boostd, do you remove the intake before pulling as well or leave it connected?

Also, Since I usually pull the engine only, I just mount it straight to the engine stand, what do you do with the engine tranny combo once you've pulled it?

I'm certainly interested in whatever is easiest, and since I have a new Lentech Valve Body to put on, pulling the tranny is somewhat appealing, since mounting the valve body from underneath doesn't seem like too much fun.

I appreciate all of the comments, and am looking at the pros and cons of each before moving ahead. I recently put new coilovers on the front so I know the struts and knuckles and all will come off quite easily. Were it all original, I might avoid it, just to avoid the added time of breaking all that stuff loose.

Hoping to get it pulled tomorrow.

Thanks again,

werd. man. umm.. basically, i just pull it out, then take off the trans. it's soo much easier that way.

and do you mean intake? or intake mani??.. either way, it wouldn't hurt to take off either..but i dont.

definitely meant intake mani, but i like to conserve letters, we never know when they might run out. I mean, we thought we had gasoline forever, now they're telling us we're running out. The letters might be next. Then what?! Then WHAT?!

Sorry.

So yeah, guess I'll go home, start pulling stuff, and see where that gets me.

If your just gonna do the clutch, can you pull only the tranny somehow & not have to unhook all the engine stuff, or is that even possible?

Wanted to update you all on how it went with the removal.

I went ahead and pulled the engine and transmission as a whole. I'm not really sure why, I just wanted to try it. Except for having to beat the snot out of the driver side half shaft to get it out of the steering knuckle, it was the easiest engine removal I've ever done.

The lift points are setup to balance the engine and transmission as it comes out, so when you raise the engine up, it just slides right up without leaning or rocking or bumping into anything.

It was just nice not having to work with weird angles trying to get the engine out. The realization that it's not coming out until you now remove part XYZ so you have to put it back down. Getting one guy on a jack under the transmission and hoping something isn't getting bent while all of this finagling is going on. And then having to worry about all of it again in reverse when putting it back in.

I'm not saying I'm never doing it the old way again, but I'm never doing it the old way again.

I realize I'm digging up a 5 year old thread here, but I'm looking for advice with my engine pull. Never done one before, so my competence still remains to be proven, but theoretically it shouldn't be too difficult. I've marked and unhooked my wiring harness, but I'm looking for more info on what some of the connectors were and what some of the vacuum lines are. Any suggestions on where I could look for more info? Yes, I'm using the search option, but I'm apparently not wording my searches well. This is the closest I've come to finding answers to ANY engine removal for a P5. Youtube was useless, and google only works if you know what you're looking for.
