yep....it will give you the additional 10 hp that the MP3 is advertised as having.....but just remember....it also means you will have to start using PREMIMUM gas all the time....

I know there is a TSB through mazda in which they flash your ECU for the p5... is it possible to flash the MP3 ecu data to the p5 ecu?

ya i had it done.

I think it was worth it. I do feel a difference, nothing major, but it is noticable. Also got a K & N filter to help with the breathing. hehe
High Octaine is a must i am told.

I didn't do the install. (think it was Kooldino). But i did watch.
Was qiuck and easy...the harderst part was getting those side panels back on! :D

Nah, the side panels are cake. Getting the metal floorboard back in is the PITA. ;-)

But yeah, there's no reason NOT to do it if you have a P5.

The retarted timing is a must if you are going turbo. So people who have the protege 5 and want to go w/ n/a will get 10 extra horse, and the people with the MP3 get to be boosted, it works out good for both sides.

but if you have an MP3 what is the advantage for swaping it out for and MP5?

its for mp3's with turbo. the non-advanced timing is friendlier for the turbo, apparently. so if you have a p5 and you're thinking turbo in the future, don't swap =)

I'm also going to confirm, you'll notice the difference if you get the
mp3 ecu. Much more zippy.. or zoom zoomy now. IMHO.

pro5foote - you may be able to do a search and find something better than this, but...

-pull of plastic kick panel on right side of passenger side foot area. Ditto for left side passenger foot area.

-pull the carpet forward.

-with a 10mm DEEP socket, unbolt the 4 nuts on the metal plate you see.

-pull the plate out, flip it over, unbolt two 10mm nuts on one bracket, remove the bracket, and slide out the ECU. Now loosen the bolt from the wiring harness to the ECU.

-pull the wiring harness apart from the ECU.

-Now do everything in reverse to get it all back together.

:-)

Thanks kooldino, someone said in an earlier post that the most difficult part was getting the side panel back on... is this an easier way to do it?

You won't get 10 hp from the ECU. Here's a dyno graph of the difference:

http://www.flyinmiata.com/protege/tech/dyno_runs/MP3_ecu_comparison.pdf

Same car, two different ECUs. Blue is the MP3 ECU (the car is an MP3) and red is the P5 ECU. The 10 hp comes from the exhaust and the ECU combined.

Keith

i think the 10hp goes for the p5 with the mp3 ecu.. and for the mp3 to get gains from a p5 ecu it'd have to have a turbo
