So on my way back from a camping trip baterry light comes on in my 04 Mazda 6 2.3 auto. Have no tools with me to check or anything but my brother in-law was about 1.5-2hr drive away. Battery spitting acid and sulphur smell coming from it. Only place open in the small town was a walmart so I was resorted to buying a battery from there. Get it to the in-law and hook up voltmeter and its running at 16V. Replaced the battery wih new one. Went and purchased a new mitsubishi altenator (only one in stock, others had to order) take it back and install. Took it out for a test run with voltmeter connected and it was running from 12.9-14. Volts. Let it sit for awhile to leave to go home and battery light comes back on and tranny shifting limp in 3rd gear. Connected to scanner and and it was reading low and high voltage. Also whilE on the scanner it spiked out at 17.6 volts. Does anyone suspect it could be a crappy altentator and need a replacment for the new one? Or would it be a new PCM that is needed? If its the latter how much am I looking at? Still have over 400km away from home!! Any help would be appreciated.
