Odd sequence of events…Any ideas?

Hi - I have an odd sequence of events. I bought a new to me 2012 Mazda 5 Sport, and got my inspection sticker a couple weeks ago which requires using the data port. No issues. This becomes important. Yesterday we had a lot of rain for the first time in weeks - since before I bought the car. First time running all of the equipment - wipers and all. I drove the car a couple of towns over and had another key made and programmed. After getting the key, I noticed my ambient temp display had changed to Celsius. Shortly after my check engine light came on. I went to check for codes and multiple scanners could not connect.

I checked my battery and saw it was 6 years old, and it looked it. the battery tested at minimums and was still able to start the car. I replaced the battery, which cleared the check engine light (as it should). I am waiting for the light to either reappear or be rid of it.

Any ideas what happened? Could a borderline bad battery have caused such issues? Could making a key fry something (the new key works fine). Thanks everyone!

Yeah, a 6 year old battery on its last legs could do that. Modern cars require a solid power source for those pesky electronics to keep chooching.
