Open Source (Linksys WRT54G)

Yup my Linksys wireless router isn't 'stock' lol. The reason why I picked the Linksys was simply because of the fact that its firmware is open source and upgradable. I could even modify it myself if I was ever so inclined.

Modding cars.....AND routers!! That's how we roll.

ooh i have version 2.2

looks like i have reading to do... i knew i loved this thing.

What are the odds of the router freezing up/.

ehh. The additional features sound cool...but I basically got fed up with my wireless router a while ago and now run a Solaris 8 SparcStation as my firewall/router. I also use it as a Samba server and spam assassin mail proxy among other things.

i didnt read this post of the link but dont you lose the new firmware if the router reboots or is powered off?

No. It stays until you perform another firmware upgrade or you reset the firmware by holding the reset button for 30 seconds.

my friend and I were thinking of offering these for our firewall mgmt business since they are so cheap, but we are just gonna go with a 501 or 506 instead

cool. i only have a B router, a G would be cool to pick up and i wouldnt mind having VPN...hmm...

Yeah, I just retired my old Red Hat 6.2 Firewall server with the purchase of my Linksys Router. It did Samba too. I'm falling back in love with Linux again now that I have been to RHCE class!

nice find on this. I have the WRT54G, it's very sweet. Works well with the linksys wireless gaming adapter too (xbox). I'll have to investigate.

What's RHCE? Redhat Certified Engineer or something???

I like SuSE better. Novell is doing a good job packaging Linux and getting rid of the dead weight. Their YaST2 and SaX2 control panels handle most of the configuration that you need to find in several places on Redhat. The new versions of Gnome and KDE on both are looking pretty sweet too.

How is that class?

Really fast-paced. The class assumes you know about %80 of the meterial already. It's strictly review. 4 Days worth, and then the test on the 5th day.

I scored a 36/48 on the Red Hat Linux Essentials Pre-assessment. Looks like I have a few things to work on. I never use floppy disks and I did pretty bad on the task automation questions. I know my way around crontabs but not the other commands such as 'at'.

A couple of times during the test I was tempted to log onto a machine. I use the commands every day but I just don't think about what I'm doing.

Funny how that works...its like if someone asked you to describe how to tie your shoes but you weren't allowed to look at them or do it before writing down the instructions. Could you do it?

The RHCE exam has NO questions. It is rated as the 2nd hardest test in IT next to the CCIE test for Cisco. It is ALL hands-on. Five and a half hour test.

because CCIE involves mastery of more than one operating system/technology

couldnt find any pass/fail #s for the RHCE though...

well, maybe im thinking of this wrong....it may be the 2nd hardest but that doesnt mean there isnt a big dropoff from 1st to 2nd.

I mean I am focused in one area so I would say the next toughest would be CISSP, GIAC, CCSP/NP....but i dont believe any have hands on portions so maybe RHCE is #2
