OK...what the hell is going on (TS MBC..please help)

Hey guys.

I'm going to the track tomorrow morning, and I cannot get this figured out for the life of me.

I bought a TurboSmart MBC from a member here...it seems to work OK (not broken), but I'm having trouble with it. I didn't get any install instructions, so I just followed the instructions I found here on this site. I read a couple of different installs, and I originally had it this way:

MBC (SIDE ARROW POINTS) to bottom wategate actuator nipple
MBC (OPPOSITE ARROW) T'd into the BPV line.
All other nipples capped (the two on the stock solenoid, one on the turbo inlet pipe, one on top of the wastegate actuator, and one on the compressor housing of the turbo)

This setup worked OK, but the pressure difference between clicks was over 1 psi, so I had very little adjustability. I was then told that T'ing into the BPV line wasn't the correct way to do it, and I should have installed it this way:

MBC (SIDE ARROW POINTS) to bottom wategate actuator nipple
MBC (OPPOSITE ARROW) to nipple on compressor housing of turbo.
All other nipples capped [two on stock solenoid, top of wastegate actuator, and turbo inlet pipe...regular (non-t'd) vacuum line between BPV and manifold (like stock)].

So, today I installed it that way, but I can't seem to get any consistency that way. I'm still fiddling with it a bit to try to get it to stay under 17.5 in all gears, but it just doesn't seem to be very consistent from one minute to the next. For instance, I'll get up to 16.5 psi one time and then the next time it'll be over 18.

So, all I'm looking for is confirmation on the routing of the lines. I have no idea where they are actually supposed to go...I was just going by different threads I was reading. I need an actual confirmation that the setup listed above is the correct one. If it helps, the arrow on the MBC says "Arrow points to wastegate actuator". Again, it's a regular TurboSmart Manual Boost Controller...nothing fancy.

you said "nipples"

I had a Turbosmart MBC, and thats the exact reason I sold it. I spent a whole day trying to dial it in and couldn't get any consistency.

You need to install a nipple in the turbo inlet pipe and connect the vacuum line there. There is a thread on M3 site detailing this.
Good luck!

Eh, I tried it that way before and it didn't seem to work. I ended up just putting it back the way I had it because even though I had it turned all the way down, I was still getting over 18psi.

I had a b**** of a time at the track today with it, too...I couldn't get it dialed in worth a crap. I ended up running a 13.8 on my best pass, but I was getting boost around 15 psi (last night it was like 17psi). I have a TurboXS MBC in the mail right now, and hope to get some sort of reflash before the season starts up again next year.

I learned long ago that most modern day cars have ECUs that are much more complex than what a simple MBC can offer in terms of "tuning." Consistency is just never in the cards with MBCs, at least, not in my own experience. There's a reason why Cobb, CPE, etc. come out with devices like the AccessPort. But to each their own I guess.

i went off of the compressor

I just installed my greddy Profec b this weekend. The connections i used were the bottom of the actuator and the compressor housing. Now while i have never installed a MBC it seems the make sense to me that it would be done the same way. The only difference between the two being mine is EBC and yours is MBC. I would guess that the problems you are having are a result of the product. (side note: The greddy profec b spec 2 holds 18 PSI rock solid.)

Hope this helps.

Everything you need to know about the Turbosmart Tee is in this thread: go to mazdaspeed forums . org, turbo section, Turbosmart MBC Installed... MBCs Suck!! thread.

I have it plumbed and it works perfectly and I only vary 1psi between hot and cold weather.

Do not ever ever tapping into the BPV line for a MBC/EBC!!!!

Awesome. I will probably still replace my MBC with the new one, but that setup should work just fine. I ordered the quick tap from ATP turbo...thanks for the suggestion!

Which line should I tap? I've tried to tune my unit and i can't boost past 10psi (spike 13.5). I take it 10psi is the stock actuator spring pressure?

The way he found works best is this way:

Cap off:
- Top wastegate actuator nipple
- Turbo inlet pipe nipple
- Both OE boost control solenoid nipples

Then connect the MBC in by running one line to the bottom wastegate actuator nipple and for the other (the vacuum source) install a quick tap fitting (http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/m...tp&Product_Code=ATP-FTG-010&Category_Code=BCS) in the boost tube between the turbo and the intercooler and run the line to that.
