ok, the "new-ness" of my MS3 expired quickly.

Um, just to clarify your clarification, Camrycev...Octane purely refers to knock-resistance and is comparing the fuel blend in question to a mixture of Octane and Heptane. There is not necessarily any octane or heptane in the fuel you're pumping, but in terms of knock (eg premature self-ignition) it will perform the same. Or rather, by averaging the results of two different measurement methods (Motor and Research (testing at I believe 500 and 700 rpm respectively...if anyone really cares I can check my ICE textbook when I get home) (hence the (M+R)/2 indicated on the pump next to the Octane rating)), the results are the same as the above-described mixture of Iso-octane and n-Heptane.

And octane doesnt specifically affect the BTU/lb of the fuel, but a higher octane enables a higher compression ratio which increases the thermodynamic efficiency of the combustion process allowing the engine to extract a higher percentage of the energy contained within the gasoline.

All gasoline basically has the same energy content (LHV, Lower heating value, again, I can look up values out of my text when I get home if people care).

Yes I'm an engineer, yes I've taken an internal combustion engines course and yes I've helped build race cars :)

PS And the reason ethanol has a higher octane rating is because alcohols are generally more resistant to self-ignition, but the oxygen contained within the ethanol (C2H5OH) when compared to the pure hydrocarbons (CnHm) basically absorbs or rather just 'holds onto' more of the energy innately contained within the chemical bonds in the fuel.

Got 342 miles on 12.5 gallons of 89 octane, about 27 miles per gallon. This was about 75% rural highway and 25% town driving. Doesn't feel down on power any. I do coast downhill in Neutral a few times each day, that saves a little gas.

Man I can't believe you're still using 89 octane (boom01)

Same tank from when I first posted. I just filled up yesterday. I don't drive the MS3 every day, I only fill up once a week if that.

Gas is $4.13 today at Costco. No complaints here. If I wanted a "sipper", I'd have bought a Corolla. Compared to my Ram, the 25 mpg in my MS3 is almost double.

Thats the EXACT reason I decided to buy a brand new car, because I don't trust people with high performance turbo motors. Most people have no mechanical sympathy for their cars =(

I bet my car would pull 10 bus lengths on yours by the time we finished the 1/4mile.

I'd take the bet. Safe money, really. Running 89 is going to increase the risk of pinging, not turn the car into a 17 second track car (and that's probably what it would take to lose by about 400ft).

lol! I was just giving Dan a hard time.

Any way pointysticks the gas prices are dicking (upbum) us all so don't feel like your being singled out or anything. Personally, I don't worry about it because life is too short to worry about things out of your control. The only options really are to drive the car like grandma, drive less, and make sure your car is in good condition (Tires inflated, oil changes, etc) Other than this I guess you could get a different car but you would still lose a lot $$ in the transaction obviously.

Like MS3007 said, keep up maintence, maybe even go with an intake sysetm, help your MPG's out a bit. But you bought the car in a time when gas prices have been climbing, these things came out just a year or so ago, and the prices havnt been exactly at a stand still. You bought it when s*** was going up, and you couldnt of assumed they were gonna peak at like 4 bucks did you? s***, reguardless of what you drive excluding econobox, mo-mo kikle or somthing, then your really not paying that much more for the price of gas. roughly 20 cents more than regular, and the MS3 does get pretty decent MPG as is. Either quitcha bitchin, or sell it, buy a s*** slow car and go through your 1 life conserveing money until you die and get buried with it. s***, man up, s*** or get off the pot. Sell it if you dont wanna pay for it, your loss, im content with my purchase, ill keep the car until it falls apart on me.

The MS3 is great, you baby it a little you can get 27MPG, which ain't bad. I'm sure that's above average. Or if you want you can blow the doors off most anything on the road.

I own an 06 Prius and an MS3. I'm happy with my hybrid.
I filled up today after travelling 764KM of mostly highway on just 35L of regular gas. My MS3, on the other hand, only gets 335KM on the same amount of fuel but that's due to really heavy right foot. A lot of my neighbours are approaching me and asking questions about my prius and totally ignoring my MS3. this really shows times have changed since gas prices here in canada hit $1.35/L of regular (that's equivalent to $5.10 a gallon for you US folks).

Clearly the Prius and the MS3 are two very...very different cars. You simply cannot expect evey similar types of gas mileage from both of them.

On another note, I have recently had to do a lot of highway driving and I haven't modified my "right foot" style driving. I am getting 27-28 MPG and I am not babying it at all.

I bought the MS3 to commute the 106 rt miles 5 days a week for my consulting job and use the rear of the car to carry my painting tools for my night and weekend gig. i had a 13mpg E150 van befor in March, running $700+ in gas bills.
I now am driving the Speed haveing fun, shifting at 3500 when the DCS is on and I got 29MPG on my last tank ful of 93, smoked several UH! fast cars and enjoyed the ride!.
The car makes sense for me!
Still havn't told my wife the car use's Premium!

4.75 a gallon? Where in the world do you live? I am in Michigan which has one of highest gas taxes in the states and I havent seen above 4.35 yet. Unreal. I have a 60 mile a day commute and although premium is that, premium I am doing well with the average 28 miles to the gallon. I will tell you, I ran a weekend at the Dragon in Tennessee and after got 32 MPG all the way home, 595 miles.

i payed 4.079 yesterday for 93, i like my new phone, my navigation has a serch for fuel lowest price. russum be sure to tell her it take premium before she drives it and decides to be nice and fill it up for you. then when you get it back its in limp home mode.
