I'm sorry but WTF is the deal with people complaining about the stock car so much! GEEZ ITS STOCK!!!! if you r not happy with it upgrade. Now this is no excuse for the clunk. Yes the fuel maps suck. dont sit around and wait for mazda to do something about it. if they cause that much of a problem for you fix it. the car is still quick, its not ungodly fast. Its a turbokit bolted onto a motor. for the price of these cars and what they come with i'm suprised.

I would especially like to see people quit complaining about how their cars can't outrun a Dodge SRT4 on a freeway. If you want a car that can do that, go take your $20,000 and buy a semi-used Mustang or Firebird instead. You'll have a ton of straight line power and no handling whatsoever. But, obviously you don't care about handling if all you're worried about is drag racing modified skittles all day long. Get over it people.

Actually if you wanted to give and SRT-4 a run for the money. Take that $20,000 and go buy a used 92-95 corvette with the LT-1 engine. A C4 corvette can out handle and out run an SRT-4 anyday(thumb)

Being a "complainer", I am very happy with the stock car. I know the fuel maps suck and in time I "may" do something about it...but not until my warranty is up. That is why I am waiting for Mazda to do something about it. The owners manual specifically says not to mess with the timing or fuel pressure, or you may void your warranty...that can easily be interpreted by Mazda as adjusting fuel maps as well. I have the intelect to approach a situation and fix it myself, and I could ask for help along the way...but my point has been, "we should not be responsible to "fix" these "problems" ourselves (i.e. clunk and hesitation)." We just paid ~$20k for a NEW car and it doesnt' run correctly...that should not be something I should have to fix.

Maybe my hesitation problem is a lot worse than yours or anyone elses, but it seriously sucks and I dont' want to void my warranty because I took it upon myself to fix something that Mazda should have taken care of in the first place (and I would still have my warranty at that point).

I'm happy with my car minus the few problems..Hopefully Mazda will come up with some fixes as I'm trying to keep my warranty. I don't care if its the fastest car out there...everyone and their damn mother has a mustang, firebird, or some other piece of crap domestic 1/4 mile car...but hey whatever floats your boat...

I agree 100% It shouldn't be our job to fix the problems on a new "stock" car. If I wanted to fix problems I could have kept my GLI and my $400/month.

They make us wait an extra four months for the car and it still doesn't run properly. I would have rather waited waited longer for them to get things right with it.

I am very pleased with the car other then the hesitation. I don't really care too much about the clunk, as I don't have it too bad and it doesn't really hinder the performace of the car.

I think the two big problems (clunk & hesitation) are really giving Mazda and Mazdaspeed a bad name. Especially Mazda's approach to it, denying the problems existance that is what makes me angry.

It is fine that there are problems with the car, but they should be working to solve them. It has been about 5 months now since the first models hit the lots and they have released the 2003.5 with the same problem.

All I get from Mazda when complaining is have you ever driven a turbo before?... No!... Oh, it is probably just turbo lag then... yeah turbo lag kicks in heavy when I am already on the gas and boosting 6 lbs!

Anyway, I vented... I feel better it's all good!

I agree Gazord.

Although the MSP has been the best handling car I've ever owned, the way Mazda has handled both the clunk (and stalling) has deterred me from ever owning another Mazda. Ya, there will be problems with a car, but the time it's taking Mazda to acknowledge and provide permanent fixes, in my opinion, drastically needs to be improved.

Mazda seems more reactive than proactive to all issues we've had with the MSP so far.

That's ok I'll fix it on my own time because Mazda is going to do nothing. It's a limited car there is no monetary reason for them to put in any kind of effort. They will not fix the clunk, or the pulsing/hesitation/stalling. I'm sure they will hide from it and discontinue the series MazdaSpeed that is. I hope I am wrong but car makers do not give a s*** about problems if they aren't facing a class action law suit.
I however, dont have any problems with my car no clunk, no stalling, no hesitation. It does kinda pulse sometimes under full throttle in 3th or 4th gear at 3000-4000 rpm. Not every time but about 1/3 of the time it feels like it's surging to a very small degree. I still love the Protege line. I feel for Mazda because Ford surely is behind the ECU. Ford's support is both a blessing and a curse.

if you want to out run a srt4 just take that $20k and put it on a down payment on a WRX STI.......or if you want to stick to mazda and spend only $3k get a 1st gen mx6 and spend no more than $400 on mods you be able to out run a srt4 and be head up with a STI......

Actually, a stock SRT-4 will beat an 8cyl Firebird and a Mustang GT, assuming all are bone stock.

The vette will outrun the SRT-4 in the straights, but the neon will win in cornering.
