oil question

I don't know much about synthetic. My first oil change is coming up and I would like to do a full synthetic. Is anyone using amsoil. I've been told that that is a really good route to go, someone told me that its good for 10K miles but I wouldn't push it pass 7. What the consensus on which oil and for how long. Thanks

From all the reading ive done we should use pennzoil platinum 5-40,It not a true synthetic oil but good enough.I was using mobil 1 but switch because of all the talk about fuel dilution in the oil.

O_O... my first oil change is coming up as well...

but i might be taking it to the dealer though... but i gotz da mods :(

There was a point in time where car manufacturers gave people a choice what viscosity oil they could use depending on what climate the car was being used in. Now there are tougher fuel economy and emission standards, so rather than having to meet these standards with thicker oils for summer time use, they just specify one oil that'll do the job just fine 'most' of the time. However, I think that in the hot summertime months, a 5W-40 or 10W-40 synthetic like Pennzoil Platinum in a turbocharged vehicle that beats oil up to begin with, would not be a bad way to go.

Can't really tell unless you do an oil analysis, but 5,000 should keep you safe. I'm going 7,500. Why? Because I drive 80% on the highway and the manual says I can. Some people change it every 3,000 miles, but they probably don't drive 25,000+ miles a year like I do.

how many miles can I go with synthetic in our cars

I'm still new to the MS3, so take everything I say with a grain of salt, but I've already read in several threads/forums that because of the Direct Injection design of our engines, fuel dilution is a problem and the general recommendation has been to not push the oil, even synthetic, much beyond 5,000 miles.

Of course, everyone's car, driving style, driving conditions, etc is different so as mentioned, a UOA is the best way to know.

I'm hard pressed to believe this fuel dilution theory. I haven't seen one oil analysis yet done on an MS3 that proves it's an issue, but yet everyone talks about it like it's a common problem. I do believe that the extreme heat of the turbo is shearing oils down a grade, which is why I think running a 5 or 10W-40 would be a good choice, at least when it's 80+ degrees F outside, but again, not sure fuel dilution is the cause of thinning oils in this motor.

hey boosted 333 let me know how the analysis goes. How does the car run on the amsoil. This is the route I'm thinking of going and would like a user insight. Thanks

I'm about to do my oil change too with amsoil synthetic. I only hear good things about it.

I basically go to the dealer for my oil changes..Not sure what they use but they say it's good for atleast 4000-4500 miles....I've done 2 oil changes already.. am at 6500 miles and i realized the over the weekend after about 1000 miles am like a quart down..is this normal for this type of mileage??
ARE YOU GUYS USING UP OIL PRETTY FAST???GIVE ME UR FEED BACK...THNX..

No oil being used here either, about 6000 miles on this Amsoil and its in the same exact spot that I filled it to.

Well thats good u guys are not using oil like that..i'll be monitoring mine, for this weekend i'll be adding a quart..i do alot of stop and go driving..so i dont know..i guess i'll try the synthetic oil and see how much longer it lasts.
