oil pressure sending unit??

ok so to make a long story short i lost a lot of oil in the last couple of weeks and wasent really aware of it so now im installing an oil pressure gauge. so my question is (and this would really help if the people who have actually done it before could tell me) where do i install the oil pressure sending unit? its electric of course. detailed descriptions, pictures, or other threads that explain how and where to put it would be great! and ive heard i need a 1/8 NPT to a 1/8 BPT converter? is that correct? well please give me a hand guys. thanks again!!
 
i dont have a stock oil pressure gauge just oil temp. so where would the stock sender be?
 
get an oil filter adapter plate, the pressure sending unit goes into the sandwich plate, it has 3 bungs and 2 of them come with plugs, the other one is the one u screw the presure sending unit into, make sure to use loctite or teflon tape

then u run the wires through the firewall and splice/connect to the gauge/power and ur set
 
oh and u can buy the adapter plate from glowshift, along with the gauge if u want.
the gauge comes with the pressure sending unit so you'll be set if u buy those two things
 
VDO sells a set so i think im gonna go with that but i will need to look into finding a plate. where can i get one? and what size gauge should i use? 80psi? should be enough right? i dont need the 100 correct?
 
umm...well the normal psi while driving is anywhere from 60 to 80 maybe even higher so i would go with the 100psi just to be safe
 
My oil pressure gets as high as 78 psi when I cold start, and at 3K RPM after the engine has warmed up I see around 55 psi.

As for using an oil filter sandwich plate, I'm not sure how well that works on the MSP cuz of the oil cooler of the MSP. It works great on NA Proteges, but the MSP oil cooler may get in the way of a sandwich plate.

Prosportgauges also sells sandwich plates and pressure senders.
 
this is a copy and paste of a copy and paste i did for another member at some point, outlining the steps for installing a oil pressure gauge, while keeping the stock sender, if you decide NOT to use a sandwich plate. sorry, the pics that originally went with it have disappeared.

It would help to know what gauge brand you're using, whether its electric or mechanical, and whether or not you want to keep the stock dummy light (it only activates at 3 psi, but is good at getting your attention if there is a serious problem). I used an electronic stewart warner gauge, and chose to retain the stock dummy light, so thats what this write-up pertains to. If you have specific questions, i'll probably be more ready to deal with those tomorrow, so fire away!!

to start off with, the stock sender and the block are both threaded with BSPT (british standard pipe thread). However, pretty much no matter who makes your gauge, the aftermarket sender is going to be NPT (national pipe thread), and so will pretty much all the fittings you can find. This means that you have to do some special adapters and whatnot. For this, livelyjay's post at the top of the second page in this thread is very helpful. The second list, under "1 aftermarket gauge with stock sender" Contains all the parts you'd need for your fittings, MINUS the pieces for the remote mounting (essential because not only is there not enough room, but also because you'd have a massive amount of stuff hanging off your block and vibrating and getting undue stress).

SO....

out of the block, you'll have the 1/8" BSPT male to 1/8" NPT female listed on livelyjay's list. From there, you'll go to a 1/8" NPT male to -4AN fitting (for your hose)(this is not on the list). You'll attatch the hose here (i'll go into more detail about the hose later), and it will run to another -4AN fitting, but this time with a 1/8" NPT female on the other side. Next comes the Tee fitting thats on the list (The tee has i male and 2 female ends. the male side of the tee will attatch to the female end of your hose fitting, leaving 2 open !1/8" NPT female parts). Into one of those, you will screw in the aftermarket sender. Into the other one, you will put the 1/8" NPT male to 1/8" BSPT male adapter, then the 1/8" BSPT female coupler, and finally put the stock sender into that. I know thats hard to visualize, and its a mouthful. If i need to clarify any of that let me know.

To mount this whole assembly some place, i hooked it to the underside of the intake manifold support bracket (you can't miss this piece, big black bracket thing right to the left of where your oil filter is.

Now, as for the hose.... i had ordered a stainless steel braided hose kit from summitracing.com along with hose ends, but it simply was not going to work, the hose ends were impossible to deal with, and the hose was really quite large around for the application, even though the inside diamater was just right. SO, i went to a local 'speed shop', and managed to get a hose that was also stainless steel braided, but i believe it was made of teflon so it was much thinner while being just as strong. I also was able to get one end of it with a 90 degree fitting which helped alot. I used the straight end coming out of the block, and brought it around to the left of the manifold bracket, using the 90 degree fitting to hook up to the tee.

The assembly with the senders, as i said, was attatched to the mani support bracket. The way i orientated it, the male side of the tee was sticking out to the left, the aftermarket sender was sticking up, and the several adapters and stock sender were sticking out to the right. I put a metal hose clamp around the aftermarket sender and the bracket. I also drilled a hole in the bracket in the appropriate place and stuck a nut and bolt in there to allow the entire assembly to rest on the bolt, while being held securely by the hose clamp. In addition, to make sure the aftermarket sener was grounded very well, i took a wire that was bare on both ends, stuck one end under the hose clamp and the other in between the mani bracket and the intake mani where the bolts go, to make sure it made real good contact (if its not properly grounded you won't get an accurate reading.).

Hmmm, what else.... make sure you use thread seleant, but its reccomended that you DON'T use the tape, but instead the paste stuff. I'm not entirely sure why, but i suspect it might be a way to help make a better ground contact, but i took care of that my own way. Oh and also, the BSPT peice that goes into the block that i got from the place livelyjay reccomended kept leaking. I picked up the same type of fitting from the speed shop where i got the hose, and it worked well. I dunno if all the fittings have sealing issues, or if it was just that one, but be aware that i had a problem right there.

okay SO.....

heres a general shot of the whole assembly, mounted on the back of the intake manifold support bracket. You can use the location and orientation of the oil filter to help get a rough idea for comparison on your car...



and heres a shot of sorta where the hose is running...



and now for where it taps into the block (pic is sideways, again, use the oil filter to orientate). This is where you'll find your stock switch with the green wire running to it. (you can see the stock switch on the lower right, with the green wire running to it.... )








So i know thats tons of info, and i've kind of cut and paste from things i've told people before, so if theres any holes in the logic just ask, i'm more than willing to help out!!

ok so i will deff use a 100psi gauge and for the sending unit while all these post have been of much help i need just a little more help. if i choose to run the 1 aftermarket gauge without the stock sender (that is the dummy light correct?) will my oil light always stay on? or will that be completely disabled? that route deff seems the fastest. with that said, where exactly on the block is the stock sender in specific detail? facing the car is it in the back of the block, underneath, can i see it from the top, left side, behind something, shape, pics lol, just a bit more direction? thanks again guys so far so good and everyone has helped me understand this a lot more!

jmv - you got any recent pics? I want to see the teflon ss braided hose u got. I want to do this but u stated that the ss hose and hose ends from summitracing wont work. I want to install mine but I dont know where to get the ss braided hose.

... unfortunately no i don't have any recent pics. I'll see if i can get something for you next time i jack the car up to replace my turbo studs.



As far as the position of the stock sender goes.... it is on the backside of the block. You're going to have to get to it from under the car. When you get under there, find the oil filter, then move to the left of it, it is screwed into the block, with a green wire sticking out of it. Its pretty cramped in there.

I'm 95% sure that the oil light comes on when ground is completed, so if its not plugged in there will be no ground and thus no oil light. I could be wrong though.

the website helps. Im going to try ordering the ss braided hose from summitracing. And see if i can make it work. how long of a hose do i need? Will 1ft hose be okay? Sorry for the stupid questions. I just want to get this s*** done. My car needs an oil change very soon so im hoping to do this while im doing the oil change.
 
i'm pretty sure mine was a foot and a half, its got some extra length where it loops around under there... but without the right angle fitting it will take a little more length, so i would probably go a foot and a half just to be safe. Its hard to remember for sure though, its been 3 years or so since i did that job.
 
oh sorry. I thought it would show. Ill post the parts numbers. This could help anyone else who had the same issue as me.

AER-FBM2721 - Aeroquip AN to NPT adapter fitting(-4an male to 1/8 in. npt female)
NOS-15210NOS - Nos stainless steel braided hose(-4 AN femal ends, 12in)
SUM-220446 - Summit AN to NPT adapter fitting(straight(-4an male to 1/8 in. npt male)
SUM-220450 - Summit AN to NPT adapter fitting(90 degree(-4an male to 1/8in npt male)

^^I got two fittings because i wasnt sure how to blocked look. So i bought a straight fitting and a 90 degree fitting.
I got the parts today and ordered them yesterday. Thank You Summitracing.
