Oil Filter

if someone could help me .. basically the last oil change i did i stripped the bolt to take off the housing. The bolt is stuck and iam due for another oil change , will it be bad if i leave the same filter there . Its been on there for 6000 miles already will this harm my engine bad .. thanks

if ur talk'n bout the not being able to take off the oil filter...take a phillips and hammer and hammer the phillips into the filter all the way through it and turn, but 1st drain the oil. it'll take a minute if you don't have much room to rotate the screwdriver, but its enough to get it started...

If it's the center bolt in the middle of the filter housing you don't even need to take it off (I believe it's only really to help the oil drain out of the filter). Just use your hand and a rag or an oil filter wrench to turn the housing to get at the filter. Get a new bolt from Mazda and replace it with a new gasket next time you do your oil change. After 6,000 miles your filter is more than likely shot.

10 or 20 bucks for an oil filter? I converted my 2.3 canister oil filter mount to the spin on 2.0 mount and you just use a normal off the shelf spin on filter for a 2.0. But on the speed3 2.3 I believe there is an oil bypass line on the mount housing makes the spin-on housing a bit more $. Call your dealer to find out, that is where I got mine under 70$ with gasket.

just taught me something, didn't know that...but whats the benefit? does it flow more oil? been reading about it since you posted and i can't figure out the point.

Larger filter, more oil capacity, more filter media, and in my opinion easier than the canister type filter to change.

never really had issues remove'n a filter but one time and that was because i put it on to tight (need to relax on my late night...nevermind). can't be that much more oil, why not opt for a larger sump pan?

Yeah I wouldn't worry about that worthless bolt...just remove the housing as VermZ06 mentioned and call it a day. Dealers don't ever use it anyhow to them it's TOOOOO much trouble.

thanks for the replies and yes its the bolt in the middle of the filter housing . If im to just take it off will it go back on ? i just dont want to damage anything lol , thanks again for the help

Just leave it on. All it does is help centralize the draining of the oil. If you take off that allen-screw plug first all the oil will drain out of it as you loosen the filter housing, and not along the sides

Unfortunately, if you stripped the allen screw plug, you'll have to just take off the plastic filter housing and make a mess. You might be able to take a screw extractor to get it out, then get a new one from the dealer. Or you could get the screw-on filter kit like the others said

The best thing about the screw-on type, as long as its installed with openning facing up, is that you can pre-fill the filter with oil. Its not the biggest deal ever, but it prevents a pocket of air in the system instead of constant oil flowing

Spin on filters rock! It takes like 7 mins max to change the civics oil and it makes me wish i had a spin on (and no skid plate)

You can, of course, expect warranty grief if you do the spin on idea. It's 11 bucks Canadian where I live for the stocker, at the dealer, with new O rings included. As has been said, you can just strap wrench the housing off and drain it that way.

The spin-on conversion is done with Mazda parts. The dealer has seen mine twice and had no comment.

def do the spin on conversion. i got mine from my local mazda dealer for $27 out the door including the gasket! the parts guy even said how good of an idea it was. i guess they have seen alot of those internal filter hour glass so there not even filtering oil. thats a pretty scary thought.

You got the housing and gasket for $27? I feel violated!

Gotcha. Go in with a blown engine and see how long it takes for them to find "the problem".

It's sad the the only thing you can seem to "guarantee" with a Mazda NA warranty is grief when you use it.

What are you saying here?
