How hard is to remove the oil filter coming from the top of the P5 engine (from under the hood)? And if doing it this way, what special removal tools are suggested...

added info:
Reason why I ask is because my bro just bought one of those Oil Evacuator/Extractor things.. He says he doesnt have to go under his beamer to change his oil..

Honestly, I havent ever tried to get to it from the top. The intake manifold is in the way. I always get it from underneath. To help with that, I have a claw-type oil filter wrench that fits onto the end of a socket wrench. The claws adjust to grip any size filter, and they break it loose if I cant do it with my bare hands.

Only from underneath. You have to jack to drain oil anyway...

The filter may be torqued correctly (just tight enough to not leak) and come off by hand.

I always put a shop towel around my forearm so that I don't burn myself, since sometimes you have to put your arm just right to get enough brunt to loosen it by hand.

ALTHOUGH, if you let the dealership do it, they probably torqued it to about 150 ft-lbs (whistle)...........so that could be a bit hard to loosen by hand.

As far as I know the other guys are right the intake is in the way. It does suck reaching up there with everything hot but oh well. As for torquing down the filter I think the directions on the filter states 3/4 of a turn to 1 1/2 turns, 150ft-lbs wow I don't think I would want to even try to get that off.

yeah I get it from below. Good time to inspect the CV joint boots etc. I did pull the cruise control unit and could reach the oil filter from up top, but was blind to it all and trying to get enough torque to loosten it. You could probably figure out how to do this if you really needed to.

I have heard of one or two people getting it off from above, though. Not sure who...

i have done it from above... after the intake manny was off and i was hurting because i tightened the oil filter too much the last oil change, talking about metal confetti. awesome.

yea above would be hard,
and to those of you who said u got burnt taking off the filter, why dont u just wait till the engine is cool lol

i know hot oil flows better but the oil stays hot alot longer then the exhaust does
