oil change?

I've had my mp3 for a 3 weeks around? I'll be at a thousand miles if I go out today. I was just wonderin at how many miles do you guys change your oil? And what you guys use?

I always change my oil with a new car at 1,000 miles. then every 3,000 after that. I use Mobile 1 synt.

Mazda's oil from the factory is problaby fine, but it's not a synthetic. I'm using 5-30 for a now. I'll be switching back to 10-30 in the spring.

You change the oil early on a new car because the engine breaks in and any metal pieces that may have come off during break in (probably very small pieces) will be in the oil and circulated through your engine. So after about 1000 miles or so, all of the break in is done so changine the oil will get rid of most of the remains of the break in.

quick questions for you guys, my manual was stolen when my car was broken into. i have 5 quarts of mobil 1 sythetic in my trunk i just need to know 2 things:

1. how much oil do we need. my old zx2 was 4.5 quarts, how much do we need.

2. does anybody have the part number for the K&N or Mobil 1 filters. thanx

nevermind i found this on mobil website

Based on the information provided, this is the correct Mobil 1 oil filter for your
2001 MAZDA Protege (4 cyl. 2.0L).
Filter Exception
M1-108

I have changed my oil once so far: at 2000 miles. I used Mobil 1. I am planning to change again at 5000 and then every 5000 after that. The Mobil 1 should have no problem lasting that long.

Stupid Question (but need to know anyway): I get my oil changed at the dealership. (3yrs free woohoo) What kind of oil would they generally use there? Do I need to specify a certain type of oil?

I just changed my oil for the first time at 5000 miles. Like the owners manual says to. The days of metal bits floating around in the oil during break in are pretty much gone. The materials used in new cars these days aren't like what they used in the sixties.

I used Mobil 1 synthetic. The hardest part was getting that damn oil filter off. The guy at the factory must have fore arms the size of my thigh or something.

My car runs fine. It has run like a champ since day one.

Who was it said they changed their oil every 2500?? This is just my opinion but your wasting your money doing that. The oil coming out is just as clean as the stuff going in. Particularly with synthetic.

you really dont have to change your oil every 3000 miles. its just that its been beat into our brains over the years that people think you have to do it.

I find it funny that people will gladly pay hundreds of dollars to make their car look nice or go fast but want to push the time between oil changes. I have no info to offer to argue when you should change your oil. But I believe that the extra $20 every now and again to get the oil changed every 2500-3000 miles is not a very big investment. This is just my opinion.
And as far as metal pieces in the oil, you are right, the tolerances that metal is machined to these days basically eliminates any kind of break in, but there is still some things that need to be broken in and the engine will wear faster for the first couple months until parts mate with each other.
Long story short, a couple of more oil changes definatly will not hurt the car, so change it whenever you feel comfortable.

I see where your coming from Tim. I look at it as who has the most to lose or gain from the oil change issue. The manufacturer knows the motor better than anyone, and so I trust the manual when it says 5000 miles. They are the ones who have to replace the motor if it fails. They should know what a good interval for oil chnages are. Once again I have to look at BMW, Audi and some of the other high dollar cars that provide free shceduled maintenance. They change the oil at 5000 miles as well.

The oil companies say 3000 becuase they have the most to gain from you buying oil all the time.

The motors put out these days are designed to run for people who do almost zero maitenance. People who change there oil once a year or longer. Just my two cents though...

you do have a good point Tim, if somebody is just daily driving their car they probably dont have to worry about it, but if your heavily modding your car and racing alot you should probably change your oil more often then 5,000 miles

As far as metal pieces in the oil, isn't that what the filter is for? Shouldn't the filter be able to catch those?
