so it came time for my parent's mazda6 to have its first oil change, we got the oil, we got the filter, and we figured we'll do it ourselves (like we always did to my p5) so my dad find the filter, but he cant unscrew it, the manual said taht the dealer has a "special tool" to do that, but that requires paying money. we'd like to go around this, can anybody tell me and maybe supply pictures of how they changed thier oil filter?

thnx

Which engine do you have? The V6, I4, or turbo I4?

Here's some How-To's:
AJ (V6) oil change: http://www.mazda6tech.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=60&Itemid=0
L3 (I4)oil change: http://www.mazda6tech.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=32&Itemid=0

And for s**** and giggles:
L3 (I4) conversion to spin-on filter:

Not sure of the MZR DISI's oil change procedure is the same as the I4. I would imagine it would be. Perhaps some MS6 guys can fill that void.

BTW, do not use anything other than a strap wrench or 76mm socket to screw on the cartridge oil filter. It's been documented that using anything else can crack the filter, therefore causing oil loss and all the fun stuff that comes with loss of lubrication.

hmm.. thnx for teh advice.. i'll keep that in mind, i'll tell my dad to go find a strap wrench

I'm doing the conversion to the spin on filter at the end of this month. I think its handy how the 2.0l 3i oil filter assembly fits nicely on the 2.3l block too :)

yeah.. i showed that too my dad, he thought about it, at first he thought its a good idea, but when then he changed his mind b/c he knew he wont have time to do it, and giving it to the dealership or some garage to do it requires more money. i myself am too busy too, i barely have time for my own p5, so we decided we'll just stick to the original setup

The 76 mm with paper towl wedged in between is how most removed it. the strap wrench is the "I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot Pole" metheod.
