Oil capacity and sound

I have had my "5" since september and am very careful doing oil changes (mobil 1 5-30).....I bought it "as new" with only 6400 miles.....as i check the dipstick, it is on the full line after about 3.2 quarts......less than in the book.....(stock filter).....must be normal, right? I don't want to overfill..... and occasionally on start-up I get a quick growl.....is that bearings needing their oil? sorry if this is an old subject.......

I run the larger 626 (6 cylinder) filter Mobil 1 # 110 and put in almost 4 quarts.

If I remember stock is about 3.5 quarts so just keep an eye on the dipstick.

it would show overfill at 3.5 quarts

If I put in 3.5 quarts like I did the first oil change, the dipstick would show over fill!!!!!!! It is right on the full line with about 3.2........

I thought 3.7 quarts was the oil capacity also did you run the engine after you did the oil change and re-check the oil level after about 5 minutes so it can get into the oil filter.

That growl you hear is NOT your bearings protesting lack of oil but is probably caused by the Variable Tumble Control System (VTCS) an emission control device that is only active during starting and warm-up. Nothing to worry about. Incidently, I always fill my sump to the OEM recommended amount after an oil change and it always reads above the fill mark on the dipstick. I have never had any problems because of this.

You have to make sure and do this. Also good to check for leaks then too.

I use the oil filter for an 02 626 V6 motor and 4 quarts of synthetic. Works great. The filter is slightly larger than the P5 filter, so the little bit extra oil in the bottle is not wasted.

always

I always wait after I run the car to check the oil level......I changed it sunday and used a new "stock" filter.....ran it......checked it this morning and it is right on the full line with 3.2 quarts added.......3.5 would have it way over the line.......I don't care what the book says.......my Honda S2000 took more than the book said to get it right on the full line.......the P5 takes less........I thought it is worse to overfill than to underfill anyway...... And a friend told me he had a P5 that made excessive start up noise and the dealer replaced the motor at 1000 miles under warranty........excessively loose bearings......then after the motor leaked it's oil because the never tightened the oil filter, they gave him a new mazda 3 which he does not like as much as the P5........especially the suspension "clunking" noises and higher seating.......Any more comments??????????????????? I could go to a bigger filter then if I wanted more oil capacity?????

THE MAZDA3 is a nice car but it lost a lot of what makes the p5 a drivers car. the 3 is too numb. i also like the more trimmed and toned look/interior of the p5 compared to the 3. the 3 feels bulky.

i like to use K&N filters. try them. though they run just over $9
