Official 'Smoking Turbo' response from Mazda

Would it be possible for you to attach a text file of the recent TSB in this thread? If not, what is the TSB #?

I would like to attach a pdf file or something in it and have it thrown on the OP. But I dont know how or if its possible. I suppose I could scan the document and have it saved on here as pics.

just click "go advanced" below, and in your message you'll see an option to "manage attachments," which you can use to upload a file - pdf will do.

It took setting my idle up to 1050 but it hasn't been smoking. Fingers are still crossed but i've been in a few situations it would have smoked for sure and it hasn't.

I just had my turbo replaced on my 07 spd3.(48,000) It was barely smoking but i brought it in anyway. It smoked a little for the tech and after verifying all service records they got approval in 20 mins. That was tuesday the 9th of nov. Wed they called and said the parts were in and it would be done at 10am on thursday. It was. It seems to pull even a little harder accelerating on along onramp and the lag seems to be a little less. Mpg is just as good as it was. Hope all the other dealers are as good as mine. Oh yeah, idled for 20 min, no smoke, nothing.

Do you guys know if there is a sure fire way to make the smoking happen? My car will smoke intermittently with the 5w40 oil, but when it does, it's really bad. I have tried the TSB procedure with no consistent luck, i have also tried Ricer revs as someone else in this thread suggested but no luck there either. The dealer keeps saying they cant re-produce the problem, so i want to show up and MAKE it smoke in the parking lot so they can see it (they can't deny it then). But due to the intermittent nature, this may be hard to do unless there is some way that works close to %100 of the time. Any sugessions? Or do i have to just keep driving around the dealer and parking until it happens?

if you are "officially" on the 5w40 oil, then they should replace your turbo by default when you come in for the next free oil change. It does not have to be smoking on the 5w40 if it were smoking on the 5w30 and that led to them putting you on the 5w40 oil. At least this is what the TSB said.

Drive it hard (boost!) cool it down, then park it and let it sit turned off for a bit. then restart. let it idle for 15 minutes. Going from boost to no boost will alow the seals to leak and then puddle. letting it sit for awhile while turned off helps this. Then start up and let idle. if its going to smoke it probably will. But this is just an opinion not a fact.

Thanks guys that helps, i'll see if that works. Yes they 'should' just go ahead and replace the turbo but i would rather show up with a smoking gun (or turbo haha) to seal the deal.

Going again on Thursday.

Dropped by the dealer (Stoney Trail Mazda, Calgary) this morning and sat in the the car idling for 10 minutes or so, luckily the car started to puke smoke. I walked in to the service department and asked for them to verify. The service tech came out with me and he said "yup, that's a sticky one". Approval for new turbo is in process, i should hear back tomorrow so hopefully it gets cleared so that the dealer can order the parts. Keeping my fingers crossed....

PS, this is an 06 MS6 with about 68000Km

Yup, looks like Mazda is covering their tracks on this one. In the TSB i have (posted a page or two back), dated Aug 18 2010, it specifically states that this repair IS covered under Power Train Warranty. There is now a new TSB released in November that REMOVES POWER TRAIN COVERAGE. WTF. My argument back to them now is that at the time of my ORIGINAL complaint of smoke, this TSB did cover Power Train. If that does not work then i'll try the emissions rout. Under federal law, all emissions and emissions related components must be warrantied for 8 years.

Funny that Mazda now says turbo is covered for 2009+ cars, AFTER the updated turbo (rev C) fix was implemented. This is so frustrating.

Yah i'm pretty frustrated. i was under the impression that some were getting new turbos under Power Train Warranty. Anyone want to chime in with experience?

You are a 2008, so that would have been covered under comprehensive warranty. What realy pisses me off though is that on the Mazda USA website, it says the turbo IS covered under power train warranty. In Mazda Canada the turbo is not covered W T F!!!
