does it improve the performance at all?
how much u got it for?
might've just put on a silencer if it's that loud lol

kcbhiw (another miata autocrosser) fabbed it up for me. It's just a 2.25" dynomax muffler from summit with a 2.25" flange and a 45* mandrel bend from ebay.
Total cost? $70 max if you have a friend who can do some basic fabrication.

If you look at the muffler itself, it's basically a 2.25" straight pipe with a buttload of holes drilled through it. There's some sound deadening around the outside, and then a casing. If you look through it, it's just a 2.25" pipe. It's fantabulous. And it has improved performance. The biggest thing I noticed was a significant improvement on throttle tip / general throttle response in compared to the supertrapp I used to have. I don't know how much more power it makes yet (Dyno time scheduled for early april), but it sure works well.

Oh...were you talking about the P5 axle back?? Oops... totally didn't answer your question.
Yes, that's the one. Does it improve performance? Not for real... That seems a little pricey for it (especially once you add shipping). Check out the for-sale forum, you may be able to find one for a better price.

so just the good sound but no performance?
thx bro i'll keep my eyes on it

Hey guys,
Are there any "Mazda Speed performance Protege 5 exhaust system" at all?? i found one on ebay but not sure if it's real. if yes, anyone is using it? and how's it?

That Mazdaspeed axel-back is notorious for droning at highway speeds. Magnaflow and Racing Beat catbacks are two of the most popular for the P5 (saving for a Magnaflow myself). Better gains and no droning ftw.

i don't go on highways much...
any suggestions which to get for a cheaper price?

I would watch for a used one on the FS threads...that's probably the cheapest you will get (maybe in the $300 range). Pairs well with Header and Intake...

$300 for what? The cat backs you mentioned or for the axle back? I hope you're talking about the cat backs...

Let an old man weigh in

After getting my 2002, I got stupid and discovered all the cool aftermarket stuff and decided on the Tanabe Medallion Touring even though its a little pricey ($360). I liked the idea of low noise and ease of install as I didn't want to mess with a cat back. The photo on their web looked ok even though I sort of don't like the idea of an oversize diameter bumper outlet (seems "fake" to me).

After install and starting the car, it didn't seem any different from stock, but then realized the idle was a little deeper. Unfortunately driving 75 on the freeway caused just enough additional drone to really bug me, and I even tried to sell it. After realizing I would have to give it away, I decided to keep it, so I got a 2 1/4 " stainless tube and slipped it into the end as an experiment and noticed the drone was almost gone. So I cut off the fancy tip and had the extension welded permanant. I did go back to the stocker to see if it was a lot quieter, which it was however, the Tanabe seems to be giving me maybe 1 to 2 mpg better, so its back on.

Not much to look at if you want flash, but it works for me and is still pretty quiet but lower toned than stock. I also used Hiheat black so the muffler wouldn't show as much.

huh. imo the tanabe was one of the better looking mufflers.

i would trade my racing beat axle back portion for it... oh well.

Well, after removing the tip, it just didn't look right, Ideally I would have butt welded a 2 1/4 OD pipe all the way back, but its stepped down to 2 1/8" (slipped right in and maintained the alignment) and the "taper" was noticeable, so the blackout was a compromise. I had to have this removed from the car to get a free weld job, so couldn't play with alignment of a larger tip.

Just for those curious what a sedan exhaust looks like on the Pro5

i know this is ghetto but anyone else just eliminate the stock rear muffler and just have the resonator to straight piping for the rest of it.it is free -er flowing in theory right. i had a hks axle back and sold it cuz i knew it was mainly for the noise. then i wanted some noise again so i cut off the stock muffler and bent piping to fit. welded it together. no drone.
