OBX header install pics!

what are the right tools? and i heard that obx headers dont fit very well :-\

did yours go on ok? and how loud? punch a baby loud on the highway?

well I had an impact gun to get the spring loaded blots off to the midpipe which really helped, and good breaker bar and a ratchet set will be good for the rest. The only thing that didnt fit well was the egr piping. you have to connect the bottom end to the midpipe and have the header sitting half way on the threads to the head when you connect the pipe, with a friends help for sure, and then bolt it on the rest of the way. You might also have to unhook the brace holding the pipe up. Mine when on just fine sence I knew what I was doing. Ive heard that with the header and stock exhaust there was no noise increase. With my obx axleback it was considerably louder, my passengers said i needed a seatbelt light and an intercom because it sounded like they were in an airplane on the highway, but that all went away with my sri, now its only loud when you get on it hard. when the car ir cold you hardly hear it at all.

well i have an sri and i have a RB cat back on the way...and i was thinkin about gettin this once my money comes back. but i dont want it to be extremely loud :-\

With the rb and the sri it wont be bad at all. I love the fact that when I get hard on the gas and the rpm's shoot up near the redline the noise totally goes away and its just raw power, its not like those fart cans that get lowder as you rev it higher. I say totally go for it, and if you dont like it for some reason and want to swap it back I know a few people who might like to have a lightly used header.

Inspection

Do you have to do anything special to pass inspection? Dont you have to have a CAT in to pass inpection? In NC we dont do pipe testing, but I figure if the mechanic sees the header he will know I dont have a CAT.

You still have a cat on your midpipe, im not gonna say that you will pass any emissions test but you still have a cat. If you need to pass an expection just put the stock mani back in untill afterwards.

I didnt think the protege had 2 cats? I thought what you call the 2nd cat on the midpipe was a resonator?

Correct. There is a cat on the midpipe, the resinatior is on the next pipe back just before the axleback. Now the MSP is different though, they have both cats on the midpipe, wonder if you could get a header and a MSP midpipe so you would keep both cats?

Well, its been almost 7 months now with the header and I still love it:) No problems what so ever and still by far the most worth while mod. I have a few other quality parts provided by Ken on the way soon so be on the look out for a new install pics thread!

I'm tempted to get headers, but once installed I will be cat-less with the Cork Sport exhaust? Kinda spooked about the repercussions when it comes to emission time?

"The 'Power Series' Exhaust System is constructed of 61mm (2.4") mandrel bent T304 polished stainless steel. This is more than a cat-back system, due to the cat location it is longer than most systems (3 pieces as seen in picture). It does eliminate the second cat on the 2001- cars, and eliminates both cats on the Mazdaspeed versions. The Power Series system also weighs 20lbs less than the stock system. The 4" tip looks aggressive, yet not over the top. Removing OEM catalysts is not legal and thus this system is sold for race use. Built in resonator creating a quality, not buzzy sound."
