OBD-II Compliance Voluntary Emission Recall

Today, I received a "OBD-II Compliance Voluntary Emission Recall Campaign" notice #4907H on my MS3. They want to reprogram the PCM because the car "may be equipped with an improperly functioning on-board emission-related diagnostic system that violates emission standards and regulations".

"The monitor function used to detect Short Fuel Trim maximum threshold strategy is inoperative and the OBD system is not capable of detecting the malfunction that causes the adaptive feedback control to be exceeded. It is possible that the malfunction may not be detected by any other OBD monitor function, therefore the MIL may not illuminate and the operator would not be advised of the malfunction".

Huh? If they mess around and reprogram the PCM or ECU to meet emission standards and regulations, isn't that going to just seriously cut my horsepower and performance? Can anyone decipher this and advise if it must be done and will it compromise engine power?

no it should not affect performance... in a nutshell, all the recall fixes is the diagnostic routines that are used to detect certain malfunctions... since the original programming can't detect them properly, poor performance and obviously poor emissions will result

had this done to my 07 a month ago and no noticiable change took 45 min and they also preformed anothe recall sort of. p2006

No, the recall work won't affect performance but a PCM update certainly can. Totally subjective I know, but my engine seems to run smoother and stronger than before I brought it in for the recall.

I had this done on Tuesday and didn't really notice anything diffrent. It took about 40 minutes total with an oil change.

it hasnt helped mine i belive it is just a couple routines and the way the computer inturpets what it means

I had the recall done and I seem to be spiking at 1 psi higher in 4th, 5th, 6th gears, and then settling one higher as well; spiking to 18 instead of 17, and settling at 16 instead of 15. I know, shouldn't be, but is - wierd, wild stuff.

Will this make our cars less rich? would the black soot on the tailpipe go away since it's fixing the emmision?

It's not fixing emissions by changing A/F mixtures or any such thing. It's just making sure that a CEL goes off to warn the driver if emissions go beyond set parameters. The sooty tailpipe is here to stay.

My tailpipe is noticeably cleaner after the recall. It used to get black within 100 miles. It's been 1000 miles and it is nowhere near as sooty as it was prior.

I spoke the the Service Manager at my local dealer about this recall and he said that he has done it on about 5 cars and most of the ppl said they felt like there was less power after the recall. Since we can't go back after a reflash, I'm very reluctant to have it done until I see more posts of driver impressions.

Also, wasn't there a swirl valve recall?

mine runs a lot smoother and i feel it has more power..not as jerky and im pretty sure if ya don't get a recall done and have engine problems thats the first thing there going to recommend...i guess i trusted them to build the car why would the put a recall out that wasn't going to help you...they have nothing to gain in that respect..i care more about reliability

Still sooty, though, right? Anyway, thanks for the incentive to clean mine to see what happens. There could be something in the latest PCM update that is reducing soot, but it seems unlikely the soot will go away.

i'm taking my car in... even tho i have yet to get a letter, i like being a pain in the ass... when its warrenty work!! (loser)

That's right, it's not clean, but it is noticeably cleaner.
