2003 Proteg5
I am about as far from a gearhead as you can get. I noticed my '03 Proteg5 was getting sluggish when starting. I went and tested it and got these codes (P0171 & P0660). The codes relate to Bank 1 being too lean and the intake manifold tuning valve control circuit for Bank 1. Any ideas would be helpful....

I'm getting the same two codes on my 2003 MSP. Have you solved this problem yet? Mine started with a rough idle that drops as low as 400 rpms, I had a mechanic check it out and they said they were lead to one of the vacuum solenoids. They found it was dirty so they cleaned it off, tested it, and put it back in, cleared the codes and charged me $90. The CEL came back on the next day. Recently the problem has been getting worse so I'm trying again to figure it out. From what I understand the P0171 code could point to a number of things including bad or dirty MAF, bad fuel pressure regulator, vacuum leak, or O2 sensor. I don't know much about the second one, but I assume they're related since they both showed up at the same time. I'll be sure to post more here if I figure it out.

I had the same issues both of you are describing. My issue was the intake tube having a crack in it from the maf to the throttle body. You might want to check and see if the same thing has happend.

This was causing my car to idle sometimes and almost die on occasion. It was also causing a stumble on light throttle and detonation...

Hope this helps.

i have a mazda protege 5, i put a cold air intake, obx headers and apexi n1 catback exhaust. When it first starts up it runs great, once it warms up, it gets slugish starting from 0mph, then piks up again, the check engine light is on but i dont know what the codes are, any ideas??

I had the same p0171 and I did a complete check on all vacumm hose and solenoid and Guess What!!!! It was the intake hose with a air leak very difficult to see. That hose is made with a very cheap plastic or rubber and everytime you check the air filter the hose get more deteriorated. The symptoms was low mpg, a "system too lean" code and rough idle. Take a look to that hose and maybe you will solve your issues with p0171. I solve mine thank God

Just got this code about 3 days ago and haven't been able to solve it yet... Tightened everything up checked MAF , vacume hoses.... Still on.... Have no idea what it is at this point ....
