Nocturnalspeed's Welcome & Build Thread

Nice what are you gonna swap out to a t3? I was talking to your brother the other week about your power goals it should be pretty sweet when its done. Btw thanks for the fuel rail it should be going on soon

To be honest with you man I'm not sure what setup I should go with. I want to hit anywhere between 400-450whp and daily drive 300whp. I'm doing the whole long block with all the goodies, but when it comes to which turbo setup I'll be using... I honestly have no clue. Been reading through multiple forums and various webistes, but s*** is far more complicated then I thought... (braindead

lol just bolt a 3071 or a 3076 on to your steed speed turn the boost up and bam there you go btw did you go and see sam yet to get your haltech tuned?

and just some food for thought......i was in a 3rd gen protege this past weekend running 24psi on a 2871r and second gear was useless stomp on it from a roll and traction is instantly gone even spun going into 3rd.

^ Yeah I know. I kind of wish I started on a different platform tbh :( All this money ive put in would have been great in a Supra or something haha. We live and we learn...

No, I haven't seen Sam yet. I'm waiting for the Fuel rail, injectors to arrive sometime next week. When we get those installed that weekend, we'll go see Sam that following weekend (March 26 maybe?).

T25 25psi by around 3800rpms...(bolt)

If I remember correctly you plan on doing a par gearset down the road?

not too late to sell your stuff and start on a different platform lol.

Nah, I'm not selling anything... My next car will be a 97' - '01 Acura NSX (preferably a coupe, if I could find one). I love how beautiful that car looks. Probably FI it with the Science of Speed Twin Turbo set up they made a couple years ago. :)

Need to finish this damn car though.

Your saying the SteedSpeed is a sour eye to everything else I have? It's just a temporary manifold that was available at the time. I didn't want anything to crazy since I plan on getting a custom setup in the future... or you are just commenting on the "Manifold" itself...

The fact that SIGNATURESOUND is putting down 400whp daily on it, leaves me in a peaceful state of mind.
Yes your other mods are very tasteful compared to that manifold. With what we know now about flow characteristics I can't see a company still making log style manifolds. Not only is the gasket mismatched but the immediate 90 degree bend on each port has to kill flow. The entire piece just looks cheap and should be nothing but a restriction on your potential power. What turbo is signaturesound running? From what I can tell their T3 manifold has a much better transition and proper flange compared to the stock turbo manifold. 400whp really isn't too impressive to a guy like me as I roll around on 447awhp daily and I bet bet my power comes on a lot sooner too. Don't take this the wrong way but you seem to be a tasteful modder and This vehicle doesn't exactly yield the rewards others would have. I invite you to come to join me in the Evo world where we have lots of fun with our cars. You will still have the same headache associated with modding your car but the power benefits will justify the bill.

You definately need stickyass tires to enjoy any amount of power! I use to be able to roll into wheelspin in 4th until these amazing Ecsta XS's I believe they are a type of r-comp and are just amazing I have tried not spinning them at first to break them in but I can even enjoy a good part of 2nd gear now.

Its going to be hard to select a turbo that can reach 450 and still be fun tuned down to 300. My goal was as close to 400 as I could get and after getting used to 22psi from my hiboost setup I knew I wanted similar spool and hard hitting around 20psi and with a little more topend. Keeps me modulating the gas pedal and I always have more if traction can allow it.

This car is definately not an Evo as far as aftermarket for sure...very limited options that won't crack and honestly the runners are the same id as a tube mani and after a little bit of work with a die grinder and lifetime warranty (I think??) I'm very happy. It definately outflows my old thunder that was welded 5x! And ooooooo a 447hp Evo.... never saw one of those before :)

I love Evo's, especially the EVOIX, but there are a dime adozen of those cars and I wouldn't be able to stray from the pack of awesomeness that is out there. Unique and limited is far more important to me than just raw power :)

Plus... NSX > EVO :D

That manifold doesn't have runners, well it does they are just an inch long. After that the exhaust flow smacks into a nice wall at a 90 degree angle and converging into to large ports. These are very old school and for the price you are all getting ripped off. I read through his site and designs and find them all to be a joke. The fact that he wasted his money on R&D to cast a log style manifold for an Evo X shows his lack of awareness and knowledge of the market he is working in. Does anybody make a properly built tubular manifold for this car? When I say proper I mean 304 SS piping and good TIG welds.

Check out this thread from one of our fabricators. His work is top notch and the price for his manifold is very close to what you guys are paying for garbage.

^ There used to be some nice once (before I even had this car) made by Mental Addiction Motorsports, but there hard to find. I could have went with one of those, but decided to wait and get the cheapest thing I could find that would stay reliable until I get built. Then I would get custom 304SS tubular piping when I figured out what setup I would go with.

I don't think any one is arguing with you, but it's hard to find a tubular manifold that is reliable and doesn't cost a arm and leg like shane02 mentioned.

They are more common than a Mazdaspeed I will give you that but you will get more out of it than you will this car. I don't want to seem so arrogant but reading around seeing all the headaches you guys are getting from these things and the money invested in order to make very minimal power just seems like a huge waste. This seems like a great beginner car for people who just want to bolt on an exhaust, intake, and up the boost a couple of psi just to get into the habit of modding. If my motor was prone to blowing at 200whp then I wouldn't even bother touching these things. Anything that is getting a built motor shouldn't see less than 450whp. Even with 400+whp I am sure you guys lack traction. Again I hate to be that guy who tears peoples cars down but you clearly have outgrown yours and seems like you are paying a lot for very little.

Also an NSX is an incredible machine and one of my favorites hands down but with the price of it and its parts make it hard for most tuners to afford. Besides the baller status and its ability to put a hurting on cars with twice its horsepower on a road course it really doesn't do much against cars on the street. I don't know what your type of racing is but en EVO is an all around monster and will bully an NSX in most scenarios.

You are correct about that.. this is my first modded car and surely not my last.

You are correct on both sir, but like they say... you need to pay to play and I don't have a problem with that.

Dude you're preachin to the choir here...we all know very well the shortcomings on the car! Most did not buy a protege to turn into a track monster or drag car...however they can be made into whatever you like with 2x the money and 1/2 the hp expected. It just came down to for many of us... cash in and check out or upgrade the next weak point.

I completely understand you guys didn't have the money to lay out for something a little more mod friendly and for some these are a big step over other vehicles. I am talking about the few individuals like Nocturnalspeed who are wanting to shell out tons of money to continue even further when this power plant can't seem to support it. I see people dump 5k-20k in mods for these in a vehicle that is only worth 5-7k. Even after all that you can't hold your own to a stock EVO/STI. Those can be had for mid 15k-low 20k. From your mod list you have basically already spent that. I am sure you have thought about this and I apologize for blowing smoke in your ears but I hate seeing people waste their money. If you were closer I would let you take my car out and watch you develop a permanent ear to ear grin.

All that aside I find everyones turbo selection very odd for these cars. For one a gt35r at 15psi even on a built motor is worthless. Too much lag and not enough psi to let that turbo shine. Even a 30r is outdated but Garrett just released the GTX series which includes billet wheels. The gt28rs I believe is getting the upgraded wheel but it is kind of a mismatch in my opinion. The gt3071 should spool similar and make a lot more power. If my brothers msp protege wasn't having issues I would build a kit using a stock evo IX turbo. If anyone can fabricate a turbo kit I highly suggest this route. Twinscroll is the way to go and would like to see what these cars do with a nice kit. All it would take is a custom manifold, downpipe, intake tube, and water/oil lines. All that can be made for 1,000-1,500 plus $400 for the turbo. I hear you guys make 8psi by 3800rpm and that is on a gt2554. Imagine making 15psi at 3200rpm on IX turbo that is larger than a gt28. Hell I am make the same power as a 30r with about 1000rpm advantage in spool. Just food for thought for anyone who wants to upgrade to something better.

Thanks for your advice Revmoto and that website of ToxicFab's work is beautiful.

Again, the MSP is something special in my eye's and the amount of money I spent can't be taken back, but I plan on continuing what I started and finishing it the way I imagined.
